Metro Vancouver parking and insurance make a second car feel like a second rent. Evo sells free-floating hybrids you grab and drop in the Home Zone. Modo sells reserved co-op cars by the hour or day. Evo free-floating vs Modo cooperative models
Evo (BCAA) is one-way inside a Home Zone: find a car in the app, drive, park legally in the zone, end the trip. You cannot reliably reserve a specific car for Saturday at 9 a.m. three days out the way a co-op can. Peak evenings and Sunday-night returns are when the map goes empty. Victoria has its own zone — do not assume a Vancouver trip ends on the Island.
Modo is a member-owned co-op: you book a parked car for a window and bring it back to its stall (unless a one-way product applies). That is the IKEA-and-back or “I need a van at 8 a.m.” product. Plus members buy a share and vote. Monthly members skip the share and pay a little more per hour. Gas or charging, basic insurance, and maintenance are included; kilometres are not unlimited on ordinary hourly bookings.

Evo’s hourly and daily caps apply to one uninterrupted trip. Three separate 20-minute hops bill at the minute rate. Modo’s Day Tripper applies automatically when it is cheaper than hourly. A Whistler weekend on Evo’s 3-day public rate ($264.99) is a different product than a Modo multi-day — price both, including Evo’s Home Zone end rule (you must finish in-zone).
Parking and insurance ownership burdens in Metro Vancouver
Ratehub’s April 2026 stack uses $200 parking and $164 insurance. Downtown Vancouver laughs at both. Break-even for occasional vs frequent drivers
Labelled month, taxes ignored on Evo for the sketch:
- Two Evo hours + two Modo Day Trippers: ~$40 + ~$200 + Compass 1- or 2-zone. Still a fraction of a financed car.
- Four Evo day rates: 4 × $104.99 + 4 × $1.85 ≈ $427 plus tax. Beats a $1,373 average. May or may not beat a paid-off beater with free driveway parking in Surrey.
- Twelve Evo days: ~$1,282 plus tax — you are in cheap-car territory before ICBC on a named vehicle would have been “wasted.”
Combining Compass transit with car-share
After the 1 Jul 2026 TransLink increase, adult stored value is $2.85 / $4.20 / $5.40 and monthlies are $117.20 / $156.70 / $211.65. Hybrid three-day 2-zone weeks often should not buy the 2-zone pass — see the Compass guide. U-Pass BC ($47.85 for 1 Sep 2026–31 Aug 2027, if you already pay it) is not a thing an Evo can beat. The winning stack is usually: Compass for work, Evo for one-way bulky trips, Modo when you must have a car at 8 a.m. Adding a financed hatchback to that stack is how the savings vanish.
Membership tips and peak-time availability realities
- Join both if you will use both; the Evo $35 is cheap compared with one missed Saturday. Modo’s $500 share is capital — only if you will book often enough to prefer reserved cars.
- BCAA already in the household: price the free Evo registration and 10% (cap $110/year) against what you pay for the club. See CAA tiers — BCAA is a different club price list.
- Sunday nights, rain, and long weekends empty Evo maps in popular pockets. Have a backup (Modo reservation, transit, a rental). Kitsilano is not Langley — walk the Sunday-night map before you sell a car.
- End Evo trips in legal Home Zone spots. Impound and YVR drop fees are how a $22 errand becomes a story.
When ownership still wins (kids, trades, cottages)
A carpenter with a van full of tools at 6:15 a.m. is not an Evo customer. Two car seats and a Wednesday swim in Richmond plus a Friday ski bag is a reserved Modo — until it is every week, at which point a cheap owned wagon plus Compass may win. Weekly cottage kilometres blow through Modo’s 35¢/km. If you would keep a car 15 days a month, run the owned TCO honestly instead of collecting memberships.
