Subscriptions hub

Subscriptions savings for Canadian households

Short answer: To save on subscriptions in Canada, list every recurring charge first (bank, card, Apple, Google Play, Amazon and the phone bill), keep one streaming service on and rotate the rest, cancel free trials before the first bill, and prepay a year only for a service you will still use in month twelve. Rotation alone can halve a streaming bill: on ad-tier prices as of 8 Oct 2026, Netflix all year plus Disney+ for four months and Crave for three is $167.81 before tax, versus $347.64 for all three all year (streaming rotation guide).

Subscriptions are quiet. Streaming, app-store trials, Prime, a gym draft, and an Adobe plan can sit on different bills and still add up. These guides are the household method: export the charges, rotate Netflix, Disney+, and Crave, cancel a trial before it bills, and write down a gym or software fee before you agree to it. Family plans cover Spotify’s same-address rule, Apple Family Sharing, a Netflix Extra Member, and one cloud pool. Phone cancel paths cover Apple and Google Play. Console math covers Game Pass and PlayStation Plus. The same page covers Chef’s Plate and Goodfood skip clocks, Spotify and Apple Music plan math, and a library card before another news or streaming charge. The same method covers Microsoft 365 auto-renew, duplicate software, a VPN you cannot remember using, the Netflix tier, Crave and Disney+ billers, a one-month Paramount+ or Apple TV visit, and Subscribe and Save items that outlived the cupboard. The same shelf covers a break-even before you prepay, a Microsoft 365 seat check, a shared renewal calendar, streaming lines on a Rogers or Bell bill, a household cap, and one cloud for photos. Education only. Prices are date-stamped in each guide.

Console memberships, a discount-gym contract, kids’ app renewals, and a meal-kit skip deadline sit on that same card. The guides further down are those decisions.

How to save on subscriptions in Canada: the overview

1. Find every charge before you cut anything

Subscriptions hide in six places: the bank account, each credit card, Apple, Google Play, Amazon, and add-ons on a Rogers or Bell bill. Export them all, then decide one at a time. The subscription audit is the method, and the hidden recurring charges guide covers 90 days of statement descriptors and PayPal. Deleting an app does not cancel it: the Apple cancel guide shows where the subscription actually lives.

2. One always-on streamer, one rotating slot

Keep the service the household actually watched in the last 30 days. Give one slot to the show you will finish, and cancel at the end of the paid period. Netflix runs from $7.99 a month with ads to $23.99 for Premium (Netflix plans), so the tier matters as much as the logo.

3. Prepay only what you will use in month twelve

Annual plans win only when you would have paid every month anyway. Amazon.ca lists Prime at $99 a year or $9.99 a month, which is $119.88 over twelve months (Prime annual vs monthly). If the household orders heavily for a few weeks and then stops, monthly is cheaper. The break-even framework works for any plan.

4. Share the plans the rules allow

A family plan saves money only when the extra seats are used. YouTube Premium Family at $22.99 beats two individual plans at $13.99 by $4.99 a month (YouTube Premium Family). Microsoft 365 Family is $145 a year against $115 for Personal, so it pays only once a second person opens it (Microsoft 365 plans). Spotify Family checks the address (Spotify address rules).

5. Read the contract before a gym or software plan

The headline price is rarely the bill. Fit4Less advertises $7.99 every two weeks, but 26 drafts plus the $49.99 annual fee make $257.73 a year before tax, or $21.48 a month (budget gym guide). In Ontario, many prepaid gym contracts can be cancelled within 10 days of the written contract (cooling-off rights).

Start with these 15 guides

The guides below are the core of this hub, grouped by the decision they help with. Every other subscriptions guide is listed further down the page.

Audit and cancel

Streaming

Annual vs monthly

Family plans and cloud storage

Gyms and contracts

Household subscription audit and recurring-charge hunt

Six billing places, a 30-day use test, and a quarterly repeat so a new trial does not become a permanent row.

Streaming rotation

Netflix, Disney+, and Crave on a calendar. One always-on service. One rotating slot. Library digital in the gaps.

Free-trial cancel checklist

Screenshot the price and the biller on day 0. Apple and Google Play do not cancel when you delete the app.

Amazon Prime annual vs monthly

Amazon.ca lists $99 a year or $9.99 a month, before tax. The cheaper plan is the one that matches how you actually order.

Gym cancel and Ontario cooling-off rights

End a GoodLife membership in the place that can see the account. In Ontario, many prepaid gym contracts can be cancelled within 10 days.

Adobe Creative Cloud early-fee traps

An annual plan billed monthly can cost half the remaining balance to leave. Read the plan type before you click cancel.

Family plans and sharing rules

Spotify needs one address. Apple needs one country. Netflix bills an Extra Member for a second home. Cloud storage should be one pool.

Cancel on the phone

Apple’s Subscriptions screen and Google Play’s payments list. Deleting the app does not stop the charge.

Cancel proof when the button is buried

A pause is not a cancel. Save the end date before you ask a card issuer to reverse a charge.

Console subscriptions

Game Pass and PlayStation Plus on a 90-day play test. Keep one. Rotate a release. Cancel the idle tier.

Gaming console memberships

Game Pass by the month, Switch Online by the year. Keep the row someone played in the last 30 days.

Train at home or at a budget club

True monthly cost, a visit count, and the annual fee hiding under a bi-weekly headline.

Kids’ apps, YouTube, and one kids’ streamer

Purchase approvals, a monthly cap, a Family seat test, and one franchise window instead of four logos.

Meal-kit skip and cancel

The weekly deadline, not the trial-versus-groceries question. That comparison stays on the Food guides.

Meal-kit skip, cancel, and post-promo math

Chef’s Plate and Goodfood cutoffs, the fees a promo leaves on the box, and whether to stay once the discount ends. The first-box trial versus groceries stays on Food.

Music and podcasts

Spotify and Apple Music in Canadian dollars, the family break-even, and a free stack when Premium is only there for podcasts.

Library media, news, and magazines

PressReader, Kanopy, and Hoopla before another streamer. One paid news source. Apple News+ only if two people open it.

Software, security, and the side-hustle stack

Microsoft 365 seats, duplicate design and writing tools, and a security renewal you cannot tie to a job.

Streaming tiers and the bill that actually charges you

Netflix plans, then Crave and Disney+ on the biller that posts the charge. Paramount+ and Apple TV stay a month, not a default year.

Amazon Subscribe and Save

15 percent when five items ship together. Prime at $9.99 or $99 is a different membership.

Annual versus monthly, before you prepay

Divide the annual price by the monthly price. Prepay only after six months of real use, and only when a second Microsoft 365 seat is actually in use.

Renewal calendar and a household cap

Two reminders before the charge, then a ceiling so the small rows cannot grow without a cut.

Streaming add-ons on the carrier bill

Disney+, Apple, Netflix, and Crave can sit on a Rogers or Bell bill. Cancel the line. Leave the internet plan alone.

Cloud storage and photo backup

Clean up before you upgrade iCloud. Pick Google One or iCloud, not both. Downgrade only when you are under the new quota.
