FoodHero guide for Sobeys-family shoppers: fees, discounts, and when it beats Flashfood
Flashfood owns the Loblaw parking lot in most Canadian how-tos. Empire shoppers — Sobeys, Safeway, Foodland, IGA, sometimes FreshCo-adjacent trips — need a different fridge. FoodHero is the chooser app on that side of the aisle: you tap specific surplus SKUs, pay in the app, and pick up in store. It is not Too Good To Go. It is not a reason to shop full-service Sobeys for the rest of the cart.
Fees confuse people into skipping a $20 meat discount. This is the fee math, the freezer habit, and the FreshCo flyer comparison so you only open FoodHero when it beats the circular.

Sobeys Inc. promotes FoodHero at participating Sobeys stores (sobeys.com/foodhero). FoodHero’s own site lists daily deals at local grocers. Canadian Budget Binder’s 2024 review mentioned Sobeys, Co-op, Foodland, IGA, Marché Tradition, and some Metro banners — participation is not a promise that your plaza is live. Older App Store reviews complaining “Quebec only” are partly historical; still, prairie and B.C. shoppers should open the map before they rearrange the week.
If Flashfood pins fill your No Frills and FoodHero is empty, you are in Loblaw country. Use Flashfood. The two-ecosystem strategy is: chooser that matches the banner you already visit. Touring both is how travel time wins.
Discount ranges and order fee math
Listed surplus is commonly 25–60% off the reference retail. The fee is separate. CBB called out $1.79 per order regardless of basket size; App Store reviewers have seen $1.79 and slightly different amounts. There is no public, forever fee PDF we can stamp as law. Date-stamp the community number and read checkout.
Sobeys’ FoodHero rules (reviewed Sep 2026) describe a $5 new-user credit within 48 hours of a first account, no expiry on that credit as posted, plus referral credits. Use it once. Do not open five accounts.
Minimums: if checkout adds a fee that eats a $3 yogurt, add a second SKU you will eat or cancel. Do not add junk to “make the fee worth it.” That is how surplus creates household waste.
Meat and produce strategies
- Meat: same SOP as Flashfood. Ground and poultry are same-day cook-or-freeze. Check “previously frozen.” Health Canada fridge windows still apply (ground 1–2 days).

Scene+ shoppers: can you still earn?
In-app surplus checkouts in Canada often sit outside the regular grocery tender, so they may not earn or redeem Scene+ the way a Sobeys till does. The winning pattern: pick up FoodHero, then shop the list, scan Scene+, load offers as usual (Scene+ grocery guide). Do not skip a $10 offer on chicken you still need because you saved $8 in the app. If a location lets you pay FoodHero at a till that scans Scene+, that is a bonus — not something to count on in a spreadsheet.

Comparing a FoodHero haul to FreshCo flyer prices
Full-service Sobeys is the wrong baseline. FreshCo (or No Frills, if that is actually your discounter) is the right one. Worked example (labelled): FoodHero chicken listed $9.99 vs $19.99 in-store, plus $1.79 fee = $11.78. If FreshCo’s flyer thighs are $8.80 for a similar weight, the flyer wins and you skip FoodHero. If the flyer is $16, FoodHero wins — then freeze.
Use Flipp on flyer day, then open FoodHero. Surplus is a substitution in the weekly system, not a second religion. FreshCo’s 1¢ beat can also steal another banner’s protein without an app fee.
Household freezer checklist
- Look at freezer space before you pay. No space, no tray.
- Pickup on an existing Sobeys-family trip.
- Portion, label cut and date, freeze what you will not cook in 24 hours.
- Put those portions on next week’s menu.
