How TTC monthly fare capping works in 2026 — and when the 12-Month PRESTO pass still wins

On 1 September 2026 the TTC turned the old monthly-pass habit inside out. You no longer have to guess, on the 28th, whether next month is a 20-day office month or a 31-day grind. Tap the same PRESTO card, debit, credit, or mobile wallet. After 47 paid TTC trips in a calendar month, the rest of that month is free. There is no enrolment. There is also no forgiveness if you bounce between a physical card and the same card in Apple Wallet.

This is Toronto-specific fare math — not a U.S. transit-card explainer, and not a generic “buy a monthly pass” leftover. Pair it with the overview in how to spend less on getting around and with GO Transit PRESTO monthly vs PAYG if your commute leaves the city.

Key takeaways

  • Fare capping is live as of 1 Sep 2026: 47 paid trips on one payment method, then free TTC for the rest of the calendar month.
  • Adult PRESTO / open-loop fare is $3.30, so the cap is $155.10 if you actually hit 47. Cash ($3.35) and PRESTO Tickets never cap.
  • Most monthly and 12-month products ended 31 Aug 2026. Two remain: Adult 12-Month at $143/month on a 12-month PRESTO contract, and post-secondary monthly at $128.15.
  • TTC still says frequent adults on the 12-Month and post-secondary riders on the monthly pass get the lowest fare — if they actually ride every month of the contract.
  • Switching cards mid-month, paying cash, or using a PRESTO Ticket resets or never starts the count. Keep tapping after you cap; that tap is Proof-of-Payment.

What changed in September 2026: fare capping replaces most monthly passes

TTC’s 1 Sep 2026 news release is blunt: Youth, Adult, and Senior monthly passes, plus Youth and Senior 12-Month passes, are discontinued. Fair Pass monthly passes are gone too. What replaced them is automatic capping on eligible pay-as-you-go fares.

Eligible payments (TTC fares page, reviewed 16 Sep 2026):

  • PRESTO card (plastic) or PRESTO in a mobile wallet
  • Interac debit or credit, including those cards in a mobile wallet

Not eligible: cash, PRESTO Tickets (one-ride $3.35, two-ride $6.70, day pass $13.50), paper transfers. Children 12 and under still ride free and do not need a cap.

Open-loop debit and credit always charge the adult $3.30, even if you would have qualified for youth, senior, or Fair Pass on a PRESTO card. If you are on Fair Pass at $2.10, that discounted PRESTO fare is the one that should cap — not a credit card.

Still sold, still a contract: Adult 12-Month Pass $143.00 per month via a 12-month PRESTO subscription (prestocard.ca). Post-secondary monthly $128.15, loaded online, in the PRESTO app, at Shoppers Drug Mart, or a PRESTO outlet — with a TTC Post-Secondary Photo ID from Bathurst Station or campus pop-ups. TTC’s own copy says those two products “guarantee the lowest fare and best value” for the people who should still buy them.

The 47-trip cap math at current adult PRESTO fares

A paid trip is the first tap in a two-hour transfer window. Board a streetcar, tap into Line 1 twenty minutes later, hop a bus: that is one paid trip, not three.

Monthly ceiling if you hit 47 paid trips (TTC fares and passes, reviewed 16 Sep 2026). Confirm ttc.ca/fares-and-passes before you budget; fares move.
Who PRESTO fare 47-trip cap Pass still sold?
Adult $3.30 $155.10 12-Month $143/mo (contract)
Youth 13–19 $2.35 $110.45 No — monthly and 12-Month ended
Senior 65+ $2.25 $105.75 No
Fair Pass (PRESTO) $2.10 $98.70 No monthly pass
Post-secondary PAYG $3.30 $155.10 Monthly pass $128.15 — usually the better buy
Open-loop debit/credit $3.30 (adult only) $155.10 Capping yes; discounts no
Bar chart of adult TTC monthly cost: $155.10 pay-as-you-go cap, $143 Adult 12-Month Pass, $128.15 post-secondary monthly pass.
Adult PRESTO $3.30 × 47 = $155.10 versus remaining pass products. TTC fares page, 16 Sep 2026. You only pay the cap if you actually take 47 paid trips.

Worked example (labelled, adult PRESTO): 5-day office, two paid trips a day, 21 weekdays = 42 trips = $138.60. You never hit 47. Two Saturday errands add four more paid trips (if each errand is outside a transfer window) → 46 = $151.80. One more evening trip → 47 = $155.10, then the rest of September is free. Hybrid 3-day office: 3 × 2 × 4.3 ≈ 26 paid commute trips. Even with weekend riding you may finish at 32–38 and never see a free ride. That is the point of capping: you do not prepay $143 for a light month.

Break-even versus the 12-Month: $143 ÷ $3.30 ≈ 43.3 trips. From trip 44 through 46, PAYG is already more expensive than $143, but you have not capped yet. Trip 47 locks $155.10. The 12-Month’s $12.10 monthly edge only exists in months you would have hit 47 anyway.

Why you must tap the same card or device all month

TTC’s FAQ is the part Reddit will learn the hard way. Trip counts are stored per payment method. A physical credit card and that same card in a phone wallet are different methods. PRESTO plastic and PRESTO in Google Wallet are different. Split a month across two cards and you can finish with 24 + 26 paid trips — 50 rides, $165 paid, zero free rides.

  1. Pick one instrument for TTC in this calendar month: one PRESTO card, or one debit/credit, or one wallet pass.
  2. Register the PRESTO card (balance protection if you lose it). Digital PRESTO lives on one device at a time.
  3. Tap every boarding, including after you have capped. Inspectors want Proof-of-Payment. Line 5 and Line 6 have no onboard payment — tap before you board.
  4. Do not “just this once” pay cash or buy a PRESTO Ticket when the reader is slow. Those fares never join the 47.
  5. If you must use a backup card, treat that day as lost toward the cap.

Since 2 Mar 2026, a PRESTO card needs enough stored value for the full fare before tap — negative balance is no longer a local-transit trick. Autoload is the adult move if you are capping on PRESTO rather than a credit card.

When Adult 12-Month and post-secondary monthly passes still beat PAYG

Buy the Adult 12-Month if all of these are true:

  • You already ride ~44+ paid TTC trips in a typical month (five-day office plus evenings, or a car-free household).
  • You will keep that pattern for twelve months. TTC does not refund mid-year or mid-month.
  • You want a known $143 rather than a $0–$155.10 draw that moves with vacation and WFH.
  • You value pass-style regional transfers: TTC says Adult 12-Month and post-secondary monthly still get a free transfer to MiWay, Brampton Transit, York Region Transit, or Durham Region Transit. (PAYG riders get Ontario’s One Fare instead — also free with the same tap method, but the pass product is the one TTC still describes that way.)

Skip the 12-Month if you hybrid 2–3 office days, take a two-week trip, or might move. Capping has no sunk cost. Post-secondary students almost always want the $128.15 monthly: PAYG at $3.30 does not give them a student discount, so the pass beats the cap after about 39 trips ($128.15 ÷ $3.30). You need the photo ID first; September passes were for sale until 8 Sep 2026 as a reminder that monthly products still have a sales window (last 12 days of the month through the 8th of the next).

Fair Pass riders: there is no monthly pass anymore. Stay on the $2.10 PRESTO fare and let 47 trips cap you at $98.70. Do not tap a credit card at $3.30.

GO Transit and regional transfers: what capping does and does not cover

Monthly fare capping applies only to eligible TTC trips. GO, UP Express, MiWay, Brampton, YRT, and Durham keep their own fare tables. TTC’s regional page (reviewed 16 Sep 2026):

  • Only trips that start on the TTC and are paid count toward the TTC cap.
  • A free TTC ride after a GO tap under Ontario’s One Fare program does not count as a paid TTC trip.
  • TTC → GO within two hours of the first TTC tap: the TTC portion can be reimbursed; then GO’s own transfer window applies (up to three hours from the first GO tap, per TTC’s One Fare copy).
  • Customers on a remaining TTC pass do not get extra GO discounts. One Fare is a PAYG/contactless feature.

If your weekday is “local bus → GO → TTC downtown,” the paid TTC origin counts; the evening TTC after GO may be a free One Fare transfer and will not help you reach 47. Track GO separately with the GO loyalty ladder (15.7% / 88.3% / free after 40 GO trips). Two systems, two counters, one physical PRESTO card if you want both to accumulate.

Month end Hit 47? Cap dollars = min(trips, 47) × your fare

Decision rule after one real month (not a vibes month):

  • Under ~40 adult trips: stay PAYG. Do not sign a 12-Month.
  • 40–46 most months, some months under 35: stay PAYG. The 12-Month overcharges the light months.
  • 47+ almost every month, 12-month horizon, stable address: Adult 12-Month is the TTC-recommended save (~$12/month versus the cap).
  • Post-secondary with ID: buy the $128.15 monthly whenever you will ride more than ~39 times. Do not wait to “hit the cap” at adult $3.30.

Common mistakes that reset your trip count

  • Two wallets. Phone Monday, plastic Tuesday. Two counters.
  • Cash “just to board.” Exact fare, paper transfer, no two-hour window, no cap credit.
  • PRESTO Ticket from a vending machine when you forgot the card. Tickets include a two-hour transfer and never cap.
  • Counting transfer taps as trips. Only paid fares count. You will think you capped at 47 boardings when you have 30 fares.
  • Assuming GO taps help. They do not. A month of GO+TTC can leave you under the TTC cap and still full-fare on GO until that ladder hits 36–41.
  • Stopping tapping after 47. Fare inspectors still need POP. Keep tapping.
  • Buying a 12-Month on 15 January and moving in June. No partial refund.
  • Open-loop for a discounted concession. Youth, senior, and Fair Pass discounts live on PRESTO, not on Visa.

The system is generous if you are consistent and boring. It is expensive if you treat every tap as a new relationship. One card. One month. Count paid trips, not kilometres.

Frequently asked questions

Do I still need to buy a TTC monthly pass?

For most adults, no. Monthly fare capping is automatic on PRESTO, Interac debit, credit, and mobile wallets after 47 paid trips. Adult monthly, youth, senior, and Fair Pass monthly passes were discontinued 31 Aug 2026. The Adult 12-Month Pass ($143) and the post-secondary monthly pass ($128.15) remain.

Does every tap count toward the 47?

Only paid fares count. Trips inside the two-hour transfer window are free and do not add a trip. Cash and PRESTO Tickets never count. A GO→TTC One Fare transfer that arrives free also does not count as a paid TTC trip.

What if I tap my credit card one day and Apple Wallet the next?

TTC treats a physical card and the same card in a mobile wallet as different payment methods. Trip counts will not combine. Pick one card or one device and use it all calendar month.

Is the Adult 12-Month Pass cheaper than the cap?

If you hit 47 adult PRESTO trips every month, the cap costs $155.10 (47 × $3.30) versus $143 on the 12-Month contract — about $12 a month. You only keep that gap if you ride that hard in all 12 months and accept no mid-year refund.

Does fare capping cover GO Transit?

No. TTC and regional caps are separate. One Fare can reimburse the TTC portion when you transfer to GO within two hours, but GO has its own PRESTO loyalty ladder. See the GO guide.
