Where to Buy Pet Supplies in Canada for Less: Chewy.ca, Amazon.ca, PetSmart, Pet Valu and Costco

A convenience premium is what you pay when the food bag, the litter, and the flea product are never written on the same line. This page is that line for Chewy.ca, Amazon.ca, PetSmart, Pet Valu, Costco, and Walmart. It does not rank them. A shelf price that was not on a page opened on 26 Sep 2026 stays blank. Program rules that were on a page are dated below. The chart is arithmetic on those rules, labelled as a $100 example, not a basket anyone bought.

Price comparison method

Write five lines before you open a second tab. Line one is the food the animal already eats: brand, variety, and the kilograms on the bag. Line two is litter or pads, with the count. Line three is one over-the-counter flea or tick product your veterinarian has already said is appropriate for that animal. This page does not pick the food or the preventative. Line four is one toy. Line five is one treat bag, with the weight. The unit-price guide is the division: dollars divided by kilograms, or by the count printed on the pack. A heavier bag with a higher shelf price can be the cheaper kilogram.

Chewy.ca’s FAQ, opened 26 Sep 2026, says orders ship to Southern Ontario, including the Toronto, Hamilton, Niagara, and Ottawa areas, for postal codes starting with L, M, N, and K. If your code is outside that list, Chewy is not in this week’s basket, whatever the discount banner says. Orders over CA $35 ship free. Orders under CA $35 ship for a flat CA $4.95. Add the $4.95 to a small order before you call it cheaper. The same FAQ describes a strikethrough “was” price as a time test or a volume test: a price held for at least 50 percent of the time, or a price at which at least 50 percent of the units sold. A “list” price is the manufacturer’s suggested retail price. Neither figure is another store’s tag.

Amazon.ca is a different seller problem. A listing sold by Amazon and a listing sold by a marketplace seller are not the same offer, and PetSmart’s price-match page, below, excludes Amazon Marketplace by name. Record the price you would actually pay with the Amazon.ca price-tracking guide. Subscription rules for amazon.ca live on the Subscribe and Save guide. Do not treat that discount as the same thing as Chewy’s $20 cap. Before a sale weekend, write the ordinary price down first. The Black Friday and Boxing Day guide is that habit for appliances. The habit transfers. The appliance dollars do not.

PetSmart’s Treats page lists free ship-to-home on select orders of $49 and up, with exclusions. Pet Valu’s FAQ says prices on Instacart, Uber Eats, and DoorDash can sit above the in-store and petvalu.ca price because of personal-shopping costs. A delivery-app total is a different basket. Fill the five lines in one sitting. A price from last month is not today’s price.

Autoship discounts and traps

Chewy’s FAQ states the benefit in one place: after the first Autoship discount (20 percent off up to CA $20.00), you save an extra 5 percent on select brands for future Autoship orders, unless a special limited-time promotion is greater. On a labelled $100 of eligible merchandise, 20 percent is $20, which meets the cap, so the discount is $20 and the merchandise is $80 before tax and shipping. On a labelled $150, 20 percent is $30, and the cap is still CA $20, so $10 of that percentage does not arrive. The 5 percent line says “select brands.” If only half the reorder is a select brand, do not take 5 percent of the whole cart.

The same FAQ says there is no membership fee and you can cancel at any time. The card is charged when the Autoship order ships. Chewy prepares the order 48 hours before the next date, and a pending charge can show up then. A reminder email arrives 3 days before. Prices can move. The FAQ says the prices in each order will not increase from what the reminder email details. Read the email. Skip the shipment, change the date up to 48 hours before, or cancel that Autoship under Manage Autoship. Cancelling stops future shipments of that schedule. The trap is a cupboard of food the animal has stopped eating. The discount did not make the extra bag useful. Grooming tools bought on a schedule you do not need are the same trap, which is why the grooming payback guide prices a clipper once, not on Autoship.

Pet Valu’s FAQ dates an AutoShip discount from 1 May 2025. In-store pickup is 10 percent off the first AutoShip order and 5 percent off recurring orders, for as long as that subscription stays on pickup. Ship-to-home is 5 percent off the first order and 5 percent off recurring orders. An already-active subscription gets the 5 percent recurring discount. The discount is on the advertised price, before tax and shipping. A reminder arrives about 5 days ahead and shows the price and the discount. The charge is that reminder price, or lower if the website price is lower on the order date. Pet Valu says it cannot guarantee a price. A skip or a date change has to be in at least 24 hours before the scheduled date. An order inside that window can still go out if you cancel the enrolment. Promo codes apply to a one-time order, or to the first AutoShip order at the moment you place it, not to later scheduled orders. Skip if you want to use an in-store coupon instead.

Pet Valu free-food rewards include AutoShip purchases of participating brands, and the reward is redeemed in store only. It cannot be redeemed inside an AutoShip order, and it cannot be combined with other offers. The FAQ’s route is to skip the next AutoShip and collect the bag in a participating store. Paying for the bag you had already earned is the second trap. PetSmart’s benefits table lists a 5 percent discount on recurring Autoship orders, base points on every Autoship order, and a limited-time 2,500 bonus points, which the table calls $5 in savings, for every $100 in repeat Autoship spend. “Limited-time” means you re-read the table before you count the $5. Gift cards, shipping, bag fees, coupon discounts, taxes, tips, and veterinary services do not earn points.

Loyalty programs (PetSmart Treats, Pet Valu rewards)

PetSmart Treats is free. You must be 18 or older and a resident of Canada, with one account per person. The program page says members earn 10 points per $1 on merchandise and on listed services: Grooming Salon, PetsHotel, Doggie Day Camp, and Dog Training. A donation to PetSmart Charities of Canada at checkout earns 2X points. Completing a profile is listed at 1,000 points. Redemption is printed on the same page: every 1,000 points equals $2 off merchandise and services. On a labelled $100 of eligible spend, base earning is 1,000 points, which is $2, and you redeem it on a later purchase. The terms page says points earned in a transaction cannot be redeemed in that same transaction.

The benefits table splits annual spend into Member ($0 to $499), Bestie ($500 to $999, with 2 additional points per $1), and VIPP ($1,000 or more, with 4 additional points per $1). At the published ratio, Bestie earning of 12 points per $1 is 1,200 points on a labelled $100, or $2.40. VIPP at 14 points is 1,400 points, or $2.80. That is arithmetic on the ratio, not money off the tag today. In-store adopters are listed for VIPP status. Status is not a reason to adopt. Fees and included care are the adoption comparison.

The Canadian terms say inactivity for 12 consecutive months makes points eligible to expire. Activity means earning or redeeming. The page’s example: points earned on 5 December 2023 are eligible to expire on 6 December 2024 and expire on 31 December 2024 if there was no activity in between. Points are not cash, not transferable, and not your property. Tell the cashier, or be logged in online. DoorDash, Instacart, and Shipt earn points only after the Treats account is linked, and the terms say points cannot be redeemed through a third-party delivery marketplace.

Pet Valu Your Rewards is free. The associate looks up a phone number. The frequent-buyer rule on the FAQ is to buy the required number of the same select brand, size, and format of premium dog, cat, or small-animal food, or select hay, and the next item is free. The count varies by brand. The worked example on that page is Performatrin: all 12 bags have to be bought within 36 months to receive the 13th free. Dog food and cat food are not combined. The free item is not given in the same transaction as the qualifying purchase. The award lasts 6 months and is redeemed in store. Members get 5 percent off cases of 12 or 24 select cans when the cans match in brand, sub-brand, size, and value, and that case discount is in store only. Many locations list a self-serve dog wash at $15, supplies included, and a fifth wash free after four paid washes, with conditions on the terms. A Senior’s Day or Military Day discount can apply when you are logged in, or through a code that is emailed. The FAQ page opened for this draft did not print the percent or the weekday, so this page does not invent one.

Loyalty is the second pass. Two percent back on a bag that costs more per kilogram is still the expensive bag. Divide first. Then ask whether the points, or the free bag at the end of the count, change the line you would actually buy.

Costco pet aisle

Costco’s shop menu, on the join page opened 26 Sep 2026, includes Pet Supplies. This build did not open a dated pet-food, litter, or treat price from that aisle. A chart that ranked Costco’s pet basket would be an invented total, so the chart below leaves Costco off. Membership is the door. Whether the household already pays it for paper, detergent, or gas is the Costco household guide. Do not add a membership on the back of a pet bag this page did not price.

Costco’s customer-service page, opened 26 Sep 2026, says that because prices are set at purchase, Costco does not price match other retailers. The same answer says that if you are not satisfied, Costco will accept the item for a full refund, and it sends you to the return policy because there are exclusions. A food the animal refuses is a return question for that policy, not a match against Pet Valu. The useful warehouse test is still the five lines, divided by the kilogram or the count, set beside the line you already priced. A larger bag that will not be eaten is not a saving. The store-brand guide makes the same point when a warehouse jug loses on the litre.

Price matching

PetSmart’s Price Match Promise, opened 26 Sep 2026, matches an identical, in-stock item at a lower price from a direct-seller competitor in pet specialty, grocery, pharmacy, or big-box retail, in that store or on the competitor’s official website. It also matches a PetSmart.ca price for an in-store purchase. The price has to be active. Proof is a receipt, an advertisement, or other confirmation. The page does not match marketplaces. It names eBay, Amazon Marketplace, Walmart Marketplace, and Temu, and it also excludes auction or reseller sites, price aggregators, closeout or discount outlets, clearance, liquidation, other special events, “free with purchase,” “buy one, get one,” and rebates. Pets and services are excluded. Ask a store associate. A screenshot of a third-party seller is the exclusion.

Pet Valu’s FAQ answers “Do you price match?” with “We do not currently offer price matching services.” Costco, as the previous section quotes, does not price match other retailers. Walmart.ca’s consumer pricing page did not return policy text on 26 Sep 2026. Amazon.ca did not yield an official price-match policy page on this build. The household price-match guide is the method for banners that do match, and for the ones that stopped. Do not carry a grocery ad-match rule into a pet aisle unless that pet retailer’s own page says the item qualifies. A match is the same item, the same count, in stock, sold by the retailer rather than a marketplace, on the day you ask. A different size is unit price, not a match.

Basket comparison table

The first table is blank on purpose. Fill it on one day, in one currency, before tax, and write the unit beside the dollars. If a cell stays blank, leave that retailer out of the total. The second table is only the rules that were on the pages named in the sources. The figure applies those rules to a labelled $100 of eligible pre-tax merchandise. It is not a shopped basket, and a shorter bar is a larger published discount on that example, not a store that won the aisle.
