Pet Store Loyalty Programs in Canada: PetSmart Treats, Pet Valu and Frequent-Buyer Cards
A loyalty card feels like a discount you have already earned. It is a second price, and only after you know the first one. This page is how PetSmart Treats and Pet Valu Your Rewards worked on the Canadian pages opened 27 Sep 2026, plus the arithmetic that shows when a free bag loses to a cheaper bag with no card. It does not rank the chains. It does not invent a point value that was not on the page. Terms change. The date on each row is the date this draft read it, not a promise that Tuesday’s terms match. Education only.
Key takeaways
- PetSmart Treats, on the Canadian FAQ opened 27 Sep 2026, is free, earns 10 points per $1, and redeems 1,000 points for $2 off a later purchase. Points are not redeemed on the same transaction, and not on Autoship orders.
- Bestie is $500 to $999 of annual qualifying spend and adds 2 points per $1. VIPP is $1,000 or more and adds 4 points per $1. The FAQ’s example of a 5 December 2023 earn is not the expiry rule you should memorize without re-reading the terms.
- The Autoship points payout on that FAQ is 2,500 points, called $5, per $100 of qualifying recurring Autoship spend, described as limited-time bonus points that must be redeemed within three months.
- Pet Valu’s FAQ: the free-item count varies by brand. Performatrin’s example is 12 bags within 36 months for a 13th bag, redeemed in store within 6 months, not combined with other offers, and not inside an AutoShip order.
- AutoShip from 1 May 2025: in-store pickup is 10 percent off the first order and 5 percent recurring; ship-to-home is 5 percent and 5 percent. A lower shelf price can still beat the free bag. The chart is an example, not their price.
How chain programs work: points, tiers and birthday offers
PetSmart Treats, on the Canadian rewards FAQ and the terms page opened 27 Sep 2026, is free. You must be 18 or older and a resident of Canada, with one account per email address. Members earn 10 points for every $1 on products and on listed services: Grooming Salon, PetsHotel, Doggie Day Camp, and Dog Training. Gift cards, shipping, bag fees, discounts including coupons, taxes, tips, and veterinary services do not earn. A profile completed the first time is listed at 1,000 points, which the FAQ calls worth $2 in savings. Redemption is in increments of 1,000 points, worth $2, on a later purchase. The FAQ says points are not redeemed in a way that pays the Autoship order itself: you cannot redeem points on Autoship orders. Tell the cashier, or be logged in. Points earned in a transaction are not a coupon for that same transaction. The terms say points are not cash, are not transferable, and are not your property.
Tiers on that FAQ: Bestie is $500 to $999 of annual qualifying spend and adds 2 points per $1. VIPP is $1,000 or more and adds 4 points per $1. Status is awarded within 24 hours of the threshold, and the bonus applies to transactions after that, not to a second purchase the same day if you crossed the line on the first. The FAQ’s example: a member who reaches Bestie on 15 June 2024 keeps that status through 31 December 2025, and must spend more than $500 during 2025 to keep the following status period. There is a calendar-year cap of 2.5 million points, which the FAQ says is redeemable for $5,000. A birthday offer was not given a dollar or a percent on the pages opened here, so none is printed. If a birthday reward appears in your account, read that offer’s card before you count it. The where-to-buy guide is the wider basket, including price-match differences. This page stays on the card.
Frequent-buyer cards: buy-X-get-one-free on food
Pet Valu Your Rewards, on the FAQ opened 27 Sep 2026, is free. An associate looks up a phone number. The frequent-buyer rule is to buy the required number of the same select brand, size, and format of premium dog, cat, or small-animal food, or select hay, and the next item is free. The number varies by brand. The worked example on that page is Performatrin: all 12 bags within 36 months for the 13th bag free. Dog food and cat food are not combined. The free item is not given in the same transaction as the qualifying purchase. The award lasts 6 months and is redeemed in store. It cannot be redeemed inside an AutoShip order, and it cannot be combined with other offers. The FAQ’s route is to skip the next AutoShip and pick the bag up in a participating store.
That is not “twelve of anything.” A different brand can be a different count. The benefits page headings that a search of petvalu.ca returned on 27 Sep 2026 show buy-12, buy-10, and buy-8 versions. The direct fetch of that benefits URL returned a block, so this page treats the FAQ’s “varies by brand,” and the Performatrin 12-within-36-months example, as the lines to rely on, and treats 8 and 10 as headings to re-check on the benefits page before you count them. Members also get 5 percent off cases of 12 or 24 select cans when the cans match in brand, sub-brand, size, and value, in store only. Many locations list a self-serve dog wash at $15 with supplies included, and a fifth wash free after four paid washes for Your Rewards members, with conditions on the terms. The wash is not a food card. A Senior’s or Military Day discount is described as applying when you are logged in or through a code that is emailed. The FAQ lines opened here do not print the percent, so this page does not print one.
Stacking with autoship and coupons
Stacking is where the free bag goes to die. Pet Valu says the free-food reward cannot be combined with other offers and cannot be redeemed as part of an AutoShip order. Online promo codes work on a one-time order or on the first AutoShip order at the moment you place it, not on later scheduled orders. You can skip an order to use an in-store coupon. Starting 1 May 2025, a new AutoShip is 10 percent off the first order and 5 percent off recurring orders if you choose in-store pickup, and 5 percent off the first order and 5 percent off recurring orders if you choose ship-to-home. An already-active subscription gets the 5 percent recurring discount. The discount is on the advertised price, before tax and shipping. The charge is the price in the reminder about five days ahead, or lower if the website price is lower on the order date. Pet Valu says it can change or cancel the offer without notice. A skip or a date change has to be in at least 24 hours before the scheduled date.
PetSmart’s FAQ describes an Autoship points payout: for every $100 in qualifying recurring Autoship spend, 2,500 points, which it calls $5 in savings, on top of the base points. The same FAQ calls that payout limited-time bonus points and says they must be redeemed within three months. You still cannot redeem points on the Autoship order itself. Base earning remains 10 points per $1, which on $100 is 1,000 points, or $2, before any tier bonus and before that payout. Count the payout only while the FAQ still calls it current. The Subscribe and Save guide is a different seller’s schedule. Do not add its percent to a Pet Valu percent. The cost-per-day guide still comes first. A discount on a food the animal has stopped eating is a cupboard, not a saving.
Privacy and what programs track
Both programs are an identity, not an anonymous punch card. PetSmart’s terms say you join with the information the enrolment asks for, that you must keep personal information up to date, and that the information is handled under PetSmart’s privacy policy. The FAQ says a store signup collects first and last name, phone number, and email. Points are not your property. Pet Valu’s FAQ says the phone number is how the associate finds the account, and how they contact you about an e-commerce order problem. This draft did not open either company’s full privacy policy, so it does not list data sharing, retention, or a sale of information that was not on the page. Read the policy linked from the program before you enrol. If you will not give a phone number, Pet Valu’s lookup as described on the FAQ does not have another everyday key.
Inactivity has a price. The Canadian Treats terms say 12 consecutive months without earning or redeeming makes points eligible to expire, and the worked example is points earned on 5 December 2023, eligible to expire on 6 December 2024, expiring on 31 December 2024 if there was no activity in between. The FAQ also says, in a shorter line, that points expire twelve months after the last earn or redeem unless otherwise specified. Read the terms paragraph, not only the short line, and assume a bonus offer can expire sooner. The FAQ says bonus points must be redeemed within three months. A card you do not scan is a card that can go stale. The PC Optimum guide is a different program with its own expiry and earn rules. This page does not restate them.
When loyalty loses to a lower shelf price
A free thirteenth bag is a discount of one bag’s price spread over thirteen bags, and only if you buy all twelve inside the window and redeem before the award expires. It loses when another shelf sells the same food, or a food you are equally willing to feed, for less than that effective price. Labelled example, not a Pet Valu or PetSmart price: bags at $60, buy 12 get 1. You pay 12 × $60 = $720 and take home 13 bags. $720 ÷ 13 is $55.38 a bag if you round to the cent. A plain shelf at $54 is 13 × $54 = $702. The loyalty path costs $18 more for the same 13 bags. If you only need 12 bags and never collect the free one, you paid $720 against 12 × $54 = $648, which is $72 more, and you received nothing free. The index guide does not change this. An index of 185.2 does not make a $60 bag the right bag.
Run cost per day on both foods first. Then apply only the reward you will actually redeem inside the window. A 5 percent AutoShip discount on a food that costs 20 percent more per day is still the dearer food. The Scene+ grocery guide is another program that is not a pet-food card. Do not stack a grocery story onto a pet aisle unless that pet retailer’s page says the tender earns there. The vet-bill guide is the clinic, which PetSmart’s own exclusions leave outside the points.
Comparison table
| Program | Earn | Redemption | Notes from the page |
|---|---|---|---|
| PetSmart Treats, base | 10 points per $1 on eligible merchandise and listed services | 1,000 points = $2, on a later purchase | Free. Age 18 and over, Canada resident. Not on veterinary services. Not redeemed on Autoship orders. |
| Bestie | Base plus 2 points per $1 after $500 to $999 annual qualifying spend | Same 1,000 points = $2 | Bonus applies after status is awarded, not to a same-day purchase that only crossed the line. |
| VIPP | Base plus 4 points per $1 at $1,000 or more | Same | Calendar-year cap on the FAQ: 2.5 million points, called redeemable for $5,000. |
| PetSmart Autoship payout | 2,500 points per $100 qualifying recurring Autoship spend, on top of base points | FAQ calls 2,500 points $5, and says these limited-time bonus points must be redeemed within three months | Re-read before you count the $5. Base points on $100 are a separate 1,000 points, or $2. |
| Pet Valu frequent buyer | Buy the brand’s required count of the same food. Performatrin example: 12 bags in 36 months | Next item free, in store, within 6 months, not in the qualifying transaction | Count varies by brand. Dog and cat food are not combined. Not combined with other offers. Not inside AutoShip. |
| Pet Valu can discount | 5 percent off cases of 12 or 24 matching select cans | In store | Cans must match in brand, sub-brand, size, and value. |
| Pet Valu AutoShip, pickup | From 1 May 2025: 10 percent off the first new subscription order, 5 percent recurring | Taken off the advertised price before tax and shipping | Existing subscriptions: 5 percent recurring. Offer can be changed or cancelled without notice. |
| Pet Valu AutoShip, ship-to-home | 5 percent off the first order and 5 percent recurring | Same | Charge is the reminder price about five days ahead, or lower if the site is lower on the order date. |
| Illustrative buy-12-get-1 | 12 bags at a made-up $60 | 13th bag free, so $720 for 13 bags, $55.38 a bag | A made-up $54 shelf is $702 for 13 bags. Loyalty loses this example by $18. Not a chain’s price. |

- PetSmart Canada, Treats Rewards FAQ (H0016a) and Treats terms (H0016b), petsmart.ca, opened 27 Sep 2026. Points, tiers, redemption, Autoship payout, expiry example, and the statement that points are not your property.
- Pet Valu FAQ, petvalu.ca/faq, opened 27 Sep 2026. Frequent buyer, Performatrin example, 6-month award, can discount, dog wash at $15, AutoShip discounts dated from 1 May 2025, and the no-price-match answer on that FAQ.
- Pet Valu benefits page headings for buy-12, buy-10, and buy-8 were returned by a search of the public page on 27 Sep 2026. A direct fetch of that URL was blocked, so those two shorter counts should be re-read on the page before you use them. The FAQ’s “varies by brand” line is the one this draft treats as firm.
- No shelf price for a food bag was opened. The $60 and $54 comparison is arithmetic.
Frequently asked questions
Is PetSmart Treats worth it?
It is worth the arithmetic on purchases you would have made at PetSmart anyway. On the Canadian FAQ opened 27 Sep 2026, 10 points per $1 and 1,000 points for $2 is $2 back on $100 of eligible spend before any tier or Autoship bonus, and you redeem it later, not on an Autoship order. Points can expire after 12 months without earning or redeeming, and the terms say points are not your property. If a cheaper food is at another store, the points do not follow you, and this page does not rank the program against other cards.
Does Pet Valu have a loyalty program?
Yes, Your Rewards is free, and the FAQ describes a frequent-buyer free item after a brand-specific count of the same food, not a percent off a mixed cart. The Performatrin example is 12 bags within 36 months for a 13th bag, redeemed in store within 6 months, and dog and cat purchases are not combined. There is also 5 percent off qualifying cases of cans in store, and AutoShip discounts dated from 1 May 2025. Confirm the count for your brand on the current terms; the FAQ says Pet Valu does not currently price match.
What is a frequent buyer program for pet food?
It is a count of the same item, and then one of that item free, rather than points on every dollar in the cart. On Pet Valu’s FAQ the count varies by brand, the free item is a later transaction, and it expires. In a labelled example that is not their price, 12 bags at $60 plus a free bag is $720 for 13 bags, or $55.38 a bag, while a $54 shelf with no card is $702 for 13 bags, so the card loses that example. Your brand’s count may not be 12.
Can I stack loyalty with autoship?
Partly, and the pages say so with limits. Pet Valu AutoShip purchases of participating brands count toward the free-food reward, but the reward is not redeemed inside the AutoShip order, is not combined with other offers, and promo codes do not apply to later scheduled orders. PetSmart’s FAQ describes extra points on recurring Autoship spend and also says you cannot redeem points on Autoship orders. Read the current offer before you add a percent to a point; a discount on the wrong food is not a stack.
Are pet store programs better than PC Optimum?
They are different instruments, and this page does not rank them. Treats points and a Pet Valu free bag apply to pet purchases on those banners’ terms, while PC Optimum is the grocery program and the earn rules live on that guide, not here. A pet store card does not become a grocery card, and a grocery card does not discount a bag of food unless that pet retailer says so. Price the bag per day first, then count only the reward you will redeem.
