Amazon Prime Canada: Annual vs Monthly and an Honest Break-Even Check

Prime renews because the membership is quieter than the parcels. Amazon.ca’s own fee page lists $9.99 a month or $99 a year, plus any applicable taxes. The annual plan is cheaper per month only if you will still want Prime in month twelve. If the household orders heavily for a few weeks and then stops, monthly is the honest product, and it has to be ended on purpose.

Warehouse clubs are a different membership. Gold Star math is the Costco guide. Streaming rotation, if Prime Video is only one of several logos, is the rotation guide.

Current CAD pricing: about $99/year vs about $9.99/month—and tax on top

Amazon.ca Help, “The Amazon Prime Membership Fee,” used 24 Sep 2026, lists current pricing as $9.99 per month or $99 per year. The same page says the membership may be subject to any applicable taxes, and it tells you to cancel from Manage Prime Membership. These are not “about” in the sense of a rumour. They are the figures on that page the day this guide was drafted. Check the page again before you renew. A fee change will show there first.

Before tax, monthly for a year is 12 × $9.99 = $119.88. Annual is $99. The difference is $20.88, which is $8.25 a month if you spread the annual fee. Tax sits on top of whichever plan you pick, at the rate for your province. Labelled Ontario example, HST at 13 percent: tax on $99 is $12.87, so $111.87 all-in. Tax on $119.88 is $15.58, so $135.46. Annual is $23.59 less after that HST illustration. Alberta at 5 percent GST is a smaller gap. Québec’s combined sales tax is larger. The checkout total is the number that counts. Do not use the Ontario illustration as your bill.

Break-even on shipping alone vs shipping + Prime Video value

Write two values, and do not double-count. Shipping. Prime’s shipping benefit is the delivery fee you would have paid on orders you would still have placed, plus any order you would have skipped without the speed. Many non-Prime orders on Amazon.ca already ship free once they clear the threshold shown on the product page. If your typical cart clears that threshold, you are paying for speed and for the smaller orders under the threshold, not for “free shipping” on everything. Count those smaller orders. Ignore the ones that were free anyway.

Labelled shipping test, not a promise. Annual Prime is $99 before tax. If each order that would have paid for shipping costs you $8 without Prime, you need 13 such orders to cover $104, which clears $99 before tax. Fewer than that, and shipping alone does not pay for the year. Use your own shipping fee from a recent checkout. The $8 is an illustration so the division is visible.

Prime Video. Add it only if it replaces a streamer you would have paid for, or if it is the household’s always-on video service. If nobody opens it, the value is zero. Do not add a made-up “$15 of entertainment” because the logo is in the membership. If you are already rotating Netflix, Disney+, and Crave, Prime Video is a candidate for the always-on slot or for the empty months. It is not a fourth paid video service you forget to count. Other benefits, such as exclusive deal pricing, count only for purchases you would have made at the non-Prime price. A deal you bought because it was a deal is not savings. Add the shipping number and the video number. If the sum is under the after-tax Prime price for the way you pay, end it or switch to monthly.

Churn strategy: monthly only for Prime Day / heavy shopping months

Annual is the wrong default for a household that orders in bursts. Start monthly when a heavy month is real: back-to-school, a move, holiday gifts, or Prime Day. Amazon’s 2026 Prime Day note for Canada described the event as 23 to 26 June 2026 and repeated the $9.99 or $99 price. Join for that month if the cart you already planned is large enough to clear the fee. End the membership when the burst is over. Amazon’s end-membership page says a paid membership uses End Membership, and a trial uses Do Not Continue, so the trial does not convert on its own.

Eligible new members may see a 30-day trial on the signup page. Treat it as a trial, with the day-0 checklist. If you signed up in the Android shopping app or the Prime Video Android app, Amazon says you manage it through Google, not only on the website. Put the end date on the calendar seven days early. A monthly plan you forget for twelve months costs $119.88 before tax, which is worse than annual. Churn only works if the end date is kept.

Amazon Household sharing rules for a second adult

The name on the current Canada announcement is Amazon Family, not the older Household label many statements still use. About Amazon’s Canada article on the launch says a Prime member can invite one other adult in the household to share benefits at no extra cost. Each adult keeps a separate account, order history, and recommendations. Shared benefits described there include fast delivery, Prime Video, exclusive deals and events such as Prime Day, Amazon Luna, and DashPass. The Family Organizer chooses a payment method to share, the other adult accepts, and setup starts at amazon.ca/prime/familyhub or Your Account, Your Amazon Family.

The same article says Prime is $9.99 a month or $99 a year, and that Prime Young Adult members are not eligible to share benefits through Amazon Family. Two adults who both already pay for Prime are paying twice. One membership plus Family is the sharing path when you live at the same primary home. Read the live help page before you rely on a benefit the article did not name. Do not share a password so a second adult can “use the account.” That is not the product Amazon describes, and it mixes orders and payment methods.

How to end membership on amazon.ca and refund eligibility if unused

Amazon’s help page “End your Amazon Prime Membership,” used 24 Sep 2026, says renewal is automatic and you can turn it off. Go to Manage Prime Membership. On a free trial, choose Do Not Continue. On a paid membership, choose End Membership. Paid members who do not use their benefits are eligible for a full refund of the current membership period, processed in three to five business days. That sentence is about unused benefits. If you have been receiving the deliveries or watching Prime Video, do not assume the refund applies. Ask in the flow you see, and keep the confirmation.

Subscriptions on Prime Video, such as an add-on channel, remain after Prime ends. Open Memberships and Subscriptions and cancel those separately. Android sign-ups are managed through Google Subscription services, per the same help page. A refund, if you get one, does not cancel a channel that has its own biller.

Student Prime pricing when someone in the home qualifies

The same fee help page lists Prime Student at $4.99 per month or $49 per year, and points to amazon.ca/joinstudent. About Amazon’s 2026 Prime Day note for Canada also describes a six-month trial for college, university, and CEGEP students, and for young adults aged 19 to 24, then $4.99 a month or $49 a year, with a signup path at amazon.ca/joinyoungadults. Confirm eligibility on those pages. A student in the home can make the household’s Prime bill half of standard, before tax, when that person is the member. It does not automatically discount a parent’s separate annual plan.

Prime Young Adult cannot be the membership you share through Amazon Family, according to the Canada launch article. If the goal is one shared membership for two adults, the standard plan plus Family may fit better than a young-adult plan that will not share. If the student is the only person who needs Prime, the $49 year is the cheaper product. Run the same shipping-plus-video test. Half price is still a waste if nobody orders and nobody watches. Calendar the renewal 30 days out when the student price will end or the school year will, so a graduation does not quietly become a full-price annual charge.
