Why your Enbridge Gas bill spiked — and what Ontario households can change

Ontario gas customers open a January Enbridge bill, compare it to July, and blame “the weather” or “the carbon tax” without reading a single line. All three can be true at once: more cubic metres, a QRAM rate change, and a dirty filter. Equal Monthly Payment Plan (EMPP) can make the debit look calm while the m³ column is screaming.

This is Enbridge Ontario bill anatomy plus EMPP literacy — not a U.S. Henry Hub chart and not a retailer-contract pitch. Convert fuels in gas vs electric heat if you are shopping machines. If the house leaks, jump to air sealing after you know the bill is usage, not a mystery fee.

Disclosure: Smart thermostats are an offer type. Saving Optimizer may earn a commission if we later add partner links. We do not currently claim Enbridge, thermostat-brand, or contractor partnerships. This is education — not a rate quote or credit counselling.

Key takeaways

  • Read three blocks: gas supply (commodity), delivery / transportation / customer charge, and carbon-related line items. The OEB 9 ¢ screenshot is not the bill.
  • Separate weather (more m³ in a colder month), rate (QRAM and delivery), and usage you control (setpoint, filter, leaks). Compare m³ to last January, not dollars to July.
  • EMPP forecasts yearly cost from history, rates, and weather, then bills 12 installments plus any Other Enbridge Charges. A true-up or rollover is the bill arriving later.
  • Cheap mechanical checks: filter, thermostat setbacks, closed vents / open rooms. A 20% m³ jump in a mild month is a machine clue.
  • Assistance: Enbridge payment arrangements and Golden Age Service; LEAP emergency grant via intake agencies (up to $650 on gas). Skip payday “utility relief” ads.

Commodity, delivery, and carbon-related line items at a high level

Enbridge Gas Ontario prints several families of charges. Names shift slightly by legacy rate zone (EGD vs Union).

High-level EGD Rate 1 pattern. Confirm the PDF on your bill. OEB / Enbridge figures as of 1 Jul 2026.
Block What it is Why January grows
Customer charge Fixed monthly (EGD residential $27.69 as of 1 Jul 2026) It does not spike with weather — it just never goes away
Gas supply / commodity OEB QRAM: EGD 9.0498 ¢/m³; Union South 17.3871 ¢/m³; Union North East 17.7280 ¢; Union North West 6.6511 ¢ (1 Jul 2026) More m³ × the ¢; QRAM can also move the ¢
Delivery slabs EGD Rate 1 example: 14.3745 ¢ first 30 m³ down to 12.3904 ¢ over 170 m³ (1 Jul 2026 notice) A 400 m³ month buys a lot of slab
Transportation / other e.g. transportation to Enbridge 5.4267 ¢/m³ on that EGD notice; cost adjustments Riders and one-time OEB adjustments (a July 2026 DSM instalment is an example — not winter weather)
Carbon-related Facility carbon and any consumer carbon-related lines the bill still prints Usually ¢ × m³ — more heat, more line. Read the label; do not invent a number from a meme

Enbridge’s EGD Rate 1 notice for 1 Jul 2026 also showed a typical-customer annual impact of about $32.42 on 2,400 m³/year and a one-time 2023 DSM adjustment on July bills (about $8.82 typical). That is a rate story, not a January polar-vortex story. Use your zone’s sheet.

Three-panel diagram separating weather, rate, and controllable usage on an Enbridge Ontario gas bill.
Compare m³ to last January. EMPP hides the bar, not the physics. 20 Sep 2026.

Weather vs rate vs usage: separating the three drivers

  1. Write m³ this month and m³ the same month last year from the usage graph or bill.
  2. Note whether the month was obviously colder (or look up nearby heating degree-days if you like homework). More HDD, more m³, even at the same 21°C.
  3. Check whether a QRAM or delivery notice landed (1 Jan / 1 Apr / 1 Jul / 1 Oct are the usual OEB gas quarters).
  4. If m³ jumped in a similar or milder winter, the leftover is usage or a machine: setpoint, occupancy, filter, windows left on trickle, a failed humidifier dumping moisture you then reheat.

Dollars-to-July is a category error. July is not a heating month. EMPP dollars-to-December is also a category error — that was an installment.

EMPP equal monthly payments: what they smooth and what they hide

Enbridge’s EMPP page (used 20 Sep 2026): they combine gas-use history, current rates, and weather reports to forecast yearly use, then divide into 12 installments. Each bill is the installment plus any Other Enbridge Charges. They review periodically and can change the installment. At plan end the balance should be near $0; differences above an average month can roll into next year’s plan.

What EMPP smooths: the Visa spike. What it hides: a 450 m³ February, a rate step-up, a new teenager showering twice, a dying heat exchanger that runs longer. What it does not do: discount gas.

Before you cancel in a panic, read the EMPP balance. Cancelling can put winter actuals and any owing on the next bill. Ask for a review if the installment is clearly wrong (you downsized, you insulated, you added a heat pump). More on who should enrol in equal billing.

Furnace filter, thermostat setbacks, and zoning basics

  • Filter. A packed filter makes the furnace work longer for the same heat. Replace or wash on the schedule printed on the slot — more often if you have pets or a renovation.
  • Setpoint. One boring number you can live with beats a 24°C “just this week.” Modest 1–3°C setbacks if the house recovers without a two-hour blast. Keep plumbing walls above freezing.
  • Zoning. Close unused rooms; do not close every supply vent on a forced-air system (you can overheat the plenum). Doors work better than hero vent-closing.
  • Smart thermostat. Useful if you will program a schedule. It will not fix a sieve. Peak Perks is an electricity / AC program — it does not change the gas ¢.

When a high bill signals a mechanical problem

Call a licensed tech (and Enbridge’s emergency line if you smell gas) when:

  • m³ is way up versus last January in similar weather.
  • Rooms are uneven, the furnace short-cycles, or it never seems to satisfy the stat.
  • You hear new noises, see soot, or the condensate line is frozen / overflowing on a high-efficiency unit.
  • The house is dry as dust and the humidifier is wide open — or the reverse, windows are raining.

A $200 service visit that finds a cracked heat exchanger is not a scam. A $4,000 “tune-up” from a flyer on a shock week might be. Get the diagnosis in writing. You do not need a new furnace because January was cold.

Assistance and payment arrangement pointers (non-predatory)

  • Enbridge payment arrangements — My Account, if eligible: split a balance, pick dates, avoid late fees. This is a utility plan, not a loan ad.
  • Golden Age Service — 65+: align the due date with a CPP cheque, no late penalty on that path (Enbridge payment-difficulties page, used 20 Sep 2026).
  • LEAP — emergency grant, up to $650 toward a gas bill (OEB; electricity LEAP is a separate pot, $650 or $780 if the home is heated electrically). Apply through an intake agency (Enbridge Gas points to United Way Simcoe Muskoka as the listed agency). You must meet income rules. It is not ongoing monthly relief.
  • Low-income customer-service rules — longer arrears agreements, deposit waivers if you qualify. Tell the utility you want those rules applied.
  • OESP is a monthly electricity credit. It will not shrink the Enbridge debit. The IESO Energy Affordability Program and Enbridge Home Winterproofing can cut future use if you income-qualify — different application.

Ignore DMs that want a e-transfer “to stop disconnection today.” Call the number on the bill.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my bill so much higher than the OEB 9 ¢ supply figure?

The 9.0498 ¢/m³ EGD figure (1 Jul 2026) is gas supply in one rate zone. Union South supply is 17.3871 ¢/m³. Delivery slabs, transportation, carbon-related lines, and the $27.69 EGD monthly customer charge are extra and often larger than supply in a mild month.

Does EMPP mean I used the same gas as last month?

No. EMPP is an installment against forecast annual cost. Read the usage (m³) and the EMPP balance. A flat debit can hide a brutal February.

When is a high bill a broken furnace?

When m³ jumped versus last January in a similar or milder winter, the filter is packed, rooms are uneven, or you hear short-cycling. A weather-only spike shows more m³ and a colder month together.

Who do I call if I cannot pay?

Enbridge payment arrangements and, if you are 65+, Golden Age Service in My Account. LEAP emergency assistance (up to $650 on a gas bill) goes through an intake agency, not a Facebook lender. OESP is an electricity credit — it does not hit the gas bill.

Should I cancel EMPP after a shock bill?

Read the EMPP balance first. Cancelling can dump winter-rate actuals and any owing onto the next bill. If the installment is wrong, ask for a review rather than a rage-cancel in January.
