Lower your winter heating bill across provinces: gas, electric heat, and equal billing
Canadian January bills shock people who treated October as “the gas bill.” The lever that works depends on the heat source and the province’s market, not on a California thermostat thread. Equal billing can save the Visa card and hide a 40% jump in cubic metres. A heat-pump brochure can ignore a 100 A panel.

Diagnose your heat source: gas furnace, electric baseboard, heat pump, oil
Walk to the appliance, not the group chat.
- Gas furnace — flame, vent, filter slot, thermostat on the wall. You buy m³ (or GJ) plus delivery. Electric air handler still adds a hydro tail.
- Electric baseboard or electric furnace — long heaters under windows, or a coil in a plenum. COP ≈ 1. Every useful kWh is a purchased kWh. See the baseboard playbook.
- Heat pump — outdoor unit, maybe backup strips or a gas hybrid. You buy kWh divided by a real cold-weather COP, not the brochure COP at +8°C.
- Oil — still in older Atlantic and rural houses. Price the tank and the service contract. Federal oil-to-heat-pump (OHPA) intake closed 31 Jul 2026.
If you cannot name it, you cannot pick a lever. A “hydro is high” complaint in a gas house is the furnace fan, DHW, or a dryer — or you are not in a gas house.

Equal/budget billing as cashflow vs true conservation
Enbridge EMPP, FortisBC EPP, Hydro-Québec equalized payments, and most hydro “budget” plans estimate annual use and divide it by 12 (or review quarterly). That protects a January Visa. It does not burn less gas.
If you only watch the installment, you will not notice a 3,400 kWh January or a 450 m³ February. Open the usage graph once a quarter. A true-up is not a rebate. Details and who should enrol sit in equal billing.
Thermostat strategies that respect household comfort and pipes
- Hold a boring daytime setpoint you can live with (many households land around 18–21°C). Hero 15°C days in an occupied house are how pipes and people complain.
- Modest setbacks of 1–3°C when asleep or out, if the house recovers in under an hour. Heat pumps and leaky plexes often prefer flatter settings.
- Zone unused rooms — close the door, drop that stat. Do not freeze a plumbing wall.
- Pre-condition on a clock plan — on Ontario ULO, move recovery before 4 p.m. On BC Hydro time-of-day, avoid a 4–9 p.m. blast.
- A smart thermostat is a schedule you will actually keep. A cheap accurate dial beats an unprogrammed “smart” brick. Line-voltage units on baseboards; low-voltage on furnaces and most heat pumps.
Envelope first: air sealing before buying gadgets
Heated air that leaves is the bill. Weatherstripping, attic hatch, outlet gaskets, the dryer flap, and then attic R-value toward the NRCan zone target beat a $300 gadget. Walk through attic insulation and, for a large contract, EnerGuide. Tenants: only what you can undo.
Worksheet, 20 minutes: last January’s m³ or kWh; this January’s; whether the winter felt colder (or look up nearby degree-days if you enjoy homework); one envelope job you will actually do this month. If usage jumped in a mild month, look at the machine — Enbridge spike signs.
When a heat-pump conversation beats another winter of spikes
Have the conversation when the furnace is near end of life, the panel can take a compressor (or you can fund a service upgrade), the envelope is no longer a barn, and you have live provincial or utility stacks — not a 2023 Greener Homes blog. Federal Grant/Loan and OHPA intakes are closed. Québec Rate D often favours a real heat pump; an Ontario leaky house on resistance backup often does not.

Is equal billing a discount on winter heat?
No. It spreads estimated annual cost into installments. You still use the same GJ or kWh. A true-up is a credit or a balance owing — the bill arriving later.
Should I turn the heat down 3°C at night everywhere in Canada?
A modest 1–3°C setback is the usual comfort/pipe-safe range if the house can recover without a two-hour blast. Deep setbacks in a leaky plex or a heat-pump house can cost more in recovery. Keep rooms with pipes above freezing.
Does a heat pump always beat another winter of gas?
