Free Shipping Thresholds and Return Fees on Clothing Orders in Canada

Free shipping is a threshold, and a threshold is a nudge to spend more. The extra shirt that “saves” the postage is a purchase. The return fee on the shirt you send back is another purchase. This page is the break-even for Canadian clothing orders: what the retailer’s page actually charges, when a store return is the cheaper label, and when an order from outside Canada adds a border bill the checkout did not show. How thresholds push up order size

The threshold is designed to raise the merchandise total. On the Old Navy and Gap Canada page, the qualifying amount is merchandise only. A gift card does not help you cross $50. Tax does not. If you are at $42 and the shipping is $8, you are choosing between $50 all-in and an extra item of at least $8 that you must keep. If the extra item is $20, you have spent $12 more than the postage to avoid the postage. Write that sentence on the cart before you add the item.

lululemon’s Canada shipping page does not use that kind of threshold in the table checked 29 Sep 2026. Standard shipping, 2 to 6 business days, is described as on them. Express, 2 to 4 business days, is $20. Priority, 2 to 3 business days, is $30. The page says the delivery date at checkout is an estimate, and that the order is processed and shipped within 1 to 2 business days. A faster label is a fee, not a discount. International standard shipping on the same page is $30 USD and does not include taxes or duties. That international line is a different checkout from a Canadian address. The terms page also says a regional delivery fee, if one applies, shows on the order summary, and that delivery fees and expedited shipping fees are non-refundable. Read the summary.

Aritzia, Simons and other banners are in the table as “See retailer” where this guide does not cite a figure from their page. Do not borrow the $50.

Paid returns: which retailers charge (verify at draft)

The return fee is the number that undoes a threshold. H&M Canada’s returns page, checked 29 Sep 2026, is plain: returns to the online warehouse are $3.99, and returns in store are always free. You have 30 days after receiving the order. Items need to be in good condition with labels. The refund uses the original payment method. The page says the store does not accept returns after 30 days, and that it cannot refund bank charges on top.

The Old Navy and Gap Canada offer page says to use the interactive returns process by mail, or to bring the parcel, the shipping confirmation and the card, to a store. It does not print a dollar return fee. It does say final sale items cannot be returned or exchanged. lululemon’s return policy allows mail or store, not an outlet, and it does not print a dollar amount. The terms of sale, updated 19 August 2025, say that unless the product is faulty or not as described, you pay the cost of returning it, and that a refund is the price paid less any expedited shipping charge or regional delivery fee, which are non-refundable. The same terms say the 30 days apply unless lululemon has stated otherwise, and they give the holiday season as an example without printing a 2026 date. Amazon.ca says most items include at least one free return option. You can be charged if you choose an option that is not free, if the item is heavy or bulky, or if the return rate on the account is unusually high. Heavy means 22.7 kg or more, or a longest side over 150 cm, or girth over 330.2 cm. The fee amount is “varies.” A damage fee can be up to 50 percent of the item price if tags are gone or the item was used for a reason that is not Amazon’s or the seller’s error.

Ship-to-store and in-store returns

Ship-to-store and an in-store return are how you refuse the label fee. H&M prices that choice at zero against $3.99. Old Navy’s offer page tells you to bring the parcel to the store. lululemon tells you the outlet will not do it, so the store you pick has to be a regular store in the same country. Amazon.ca’s policy points at a large set of drop-off locations and says to follow the instructions for that item. Do not mix two orders in one return.

The trip has a cost even when the label does not. If you are already going, the in-store path wins on the H&M numbers. If you are not, compare the postage with the time. A holiday gift that has to be back before a short window is on the holiday return guide. A 30-day H&M clock starts when you receive the order, not when you find the receipt in January.

Bracketing sizes: the cost

Bracketing means ordering two sizes and sending one back. The kept size has to be worth it after the return fee and after any shipping you already paid. On H&M, a warehouse return of the unwanted size is $3.99, and an in-store return of that size is $0. On Amazon.ca, a change-of-mind return can still be free if you use a free option, and it can stop being free if the account is flagged for a high return rate. The policy says Amazon may limit the service if it is abused. Bracketing as a habit is how an account gets there. A damage fee up to 50 percent applies if the item comes back used or without tags. Do not wear both sizes “to see.”

Example with made-up inputs. The item you want is $46. Shipping, made up, is $8 if you do not add anything, so the out-of-pocket total is $54. A filler of $14 raises the cart enough, in this example, that shipping becomes $0, and if you keep the filler you pay $60. If you return the filler and pay a made-up $4 return fee, you get the $14 back and you have paid $46 plus $4, which is $50. Keeping the filler is the costly path in this example. Paying the $8 shipping is the middle. Returning the filler is the lowest only because the made-up fee is $4 and you actually return it. Swap in H&M’s real $3.99 if that is the banner, and use your own item prices. The chart uses the made-up trio so the bars are not a quote.

Rules for when online beats in-store

Online wins when the item is not in a store you can reach, the size is the one you already know, and the return path is free or cheaper than a trip. In-store wins when you are unsure of the size, the page charges a return fee, or the item is final sale online and returnable, or at least try-on-able, in the store. The return-policy guide is the provincial backdrop: Ontario does not require a change-of-mind return at all.

An order shipped from the United States is a third case. The landed cost, including the surtax on US-origin goods, is the US clothing guide. If you return the garment, duty and tax are not automatically refunded with the store credit. CBSA’s page on a refund or adjustment of duties and taxes paid, modified 5 January 2026, is where personal-use eligibility starts. Whether your parcel qualifies is check with CBSA. CBSA’s dispute page says the agency will not refund a broker’s fee or shipping and handling. Canada Post, on its customs page checked 29 Sep 2026, charges a handling fee of CAN$9.95 on a mail item that is dutiable or taxable. Ask Canada Post about that fee. The resale guide is a different exit: selling a miss is not the same as returning it.
