Heat pump rebates by province in Canada (2026 checklist)—verify before you sign a quote
Rebate pages go stale while the outdoor unit is still on a truck. Households sign a quote that assumes last year’s Greener Homes line, or a $10,000 oil grant that stopped taking names on 31 July 2026. The useful skill in 2026 is not memorizing a dollar figure. It is knowing which administrator to re-open the week you sign, and what a clean quote looks like when the federal stack is gone.
This is a province-pattern checklist. Amounts below are labelled with the page we used on 20 September 2026. If your contractor’s PDF is older than that, it is a museum piece. Pair it with cold-climate equipment and Greener Homes status.

Federal landscape after Greener Homes closure and OHPA wind-down
There is no national “apply here for a heat pump” button in September 2026. The Grant’s last document day for existing applicants was 31 December 2025. The Loan’s last apply day was 1 October 2025; funding is committed. OHPA’s last apply day was 31 July 2026; remaining applicants upload by 31 January 2027. What remains federally is mostly information: EnerGuide, eligible-product lists that some provinces still borrow, and the Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program delivered with provinces for income-targeted retrofits — not a DIY $5,000 form.
How to use NRCan and provincial directories without outdated blogs
- Open NRCan’s home energy-efficiency page and follow financial incentives by province and territory.
- Land on the provincial or utility brand (Save on Energy, Better Homes BC, Hydro-Québec, Efficiency Nova Scotia, Efficiency Manitoba, and so on).
- Note the program name, whether you must pre-register, whether the contractor must be on a list, and the date modified.
- Only then open a contractor quote. If the quote’s program name does not match the live page, stop.
Skip aggregator tables that still list Greener Homes as open. Skip Facebook groups that paste 2024 screenshots. The pain this article exists to prevent is signing a deposit on a dead stack.

Income-qualified free-install streams vs universal rebates
Two doors get mashed together in sales scripts:
- Universal / almost-universal rebate. Anyone who buys an eligible model from an eligible contractor can apply. The cap is usually a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. You still write a large cheque.
- Income-qualified direct install. The program owns the relationship. You may pay nothing if you qualify (Ontario EAP oil and some electric-heat heat-pump offers; Enbridge Home Winterproofing for envelope work; Atlantic HomeWarming-style paths). Waitlists and house-type rules are the real constraint.
Do not apply to the small rebate and then discover you would have qualified for the free path. Income tests use last year’s household size and income. Have the notice of assessment ready.
Quote hygiene: eligible models, cold-climate ratings, contractor requirements
A rebate is worthless if the serial number is not on the list or the installer is not registered.
- Model number that matches the program’s eligible-product list (often ENERGY STAR cold-climate).
- Capacity and COP at −15°C and −25°C — see the equipment companion. “Works to −25°C” is not a seasonal COP.
- Contractor ID on the program portal. Ontario HRSP and CleanBC both care who swings the wrench.
- Who files the application, who holds the rebate cheque, and what happens if it is denied after install.
- Electrical permit / ESA (or provincial equivalent) and whether a panel upgrade is inside the price.
Stacking rules and “rebate assumed in the price” red flags
- One primary heating system per household is a common CleanBC rule. Two outdoor units does not mean two full rebates.
- Ontario HRSP text we used says you cannot also take another Enbridge, Save on Energy, or Ontario program incentive for the same measure.
- Hydro-Québec: once they pay, you cannot send the money back to try a different stack.
- Red flag: the quote deducts “rebate” with no program name, or the price is only available “if you apply through us today.”
- Red flag: they want a large deposit before pre-approval on a program that requires pre-approval (CleanBC ESP, some HRSP streams).
Date-stamp discipline: re-verify every number at draft and publish
We checked the pages above on 20 September 2026. That date will age. Before you sign:
- Reload the administrator page. Screenshot the amount and the eligibility sentence.
- Match the quote’s model and contractor to that page.
- Drop any Greener Homes or new-OHPA line that is not an approved file you can log into.
- Re-run the operating-cost worksheet in gas vs electric heat with net capital after only those live dollars.
If the attic is empty, the rebate on a compressor is how you subsidize a leak. Read upgrade order first.

Is there still a federal heat-pump grant I can apply for?
Not through new Greener Homes Grant or Loan applications. OHPA intake closed 31 July 2026. Existing files have later document deadlines. Live money is provincial or utility — and it changes.
Why do quotes still show a $5,000 or $10,000 federal line?
Sales templates lag. Ask for the program name, the administrator website, and whether the amount is already in the price. If they cannot show a live form, treat the line as fiction.
Do income-qualified programs pay more than universal rebates?
Often yes — free-install or near-full-cost streams exist in some provinces (for example Ontario EAP). They have income tests, house-type rules, and waitlists. They are not the same door as a per-ton rebate.
Can I stack two heat-pump rebates on one outdoor unit?
Usually no for the same upgrade. CleanBC lists programs you cannot combine. Hydro-Québec says you cannot collect two HQ or Québec programs on the same pump. Ask in writing.
What should I demand on the quote besides the rebate number?
