How to find smart thermostat rebates from Canadian utilities (before you buy)
Households buy a $250 thermostat on a Saturday, then discover on Monday that the $100 utility code needed a pre-approved model and a receipt uploaded within 60 days. The rebate was never a till coupon. Buy-order is the whole game: confirm the live list, get the code or the application window, then spend.
This is Canadian utility rebate sequencing — not a U.S. “up to $850” brochure. Whether the device is even worth buying sits in the savings worksheet. Ontario’s demand-response card is a different pot of money — Peak Perks.

Why buy-order matters: many rebates need pre-approval or specific models
Utility rebates are not manufacturer mail-in coupons. They are program rules: a SKU list, a fuel type, a dwelling type, a date window, and proof. Instant-code paths (Home Renovation Savings “Get code”) expire and only work at named retailers. Post-purchase paths want a receipt within a stated number of days (60 days on the Ontario terms we used). Buy an ineligible colourway or a line-voltage model on a 24 V list and the portal will say no.
Photograph the serial, keep the invoice with tax and model number, and do not throw out the box until the credit posts.
Save on Energy and provincial efficiency portals
Start pages, then confirm the child page the week you shop:
- Ontario: saveonenergy.ca and homerenovationsavings.ca — smart thermostat as a single upgrade (no EnerGuide assessment required on that stream). Bundled HRSP insulation / heat-pump offers are a different application.
- B.C.: CleanBC Better Homes and BC Hydro / FortisBC offer directories. Thermostat money, if any, is often bundled with a heat pump or a Peak Saver device path — not assumed.
- Québec: Hydro-Québec Energy Wise and any current LogisVert / provincial list. Hilo hardware is a service subscription, not a $100 till code.
- Alberta and the rest: municipal and retailer pilots appear and vanish. Use the NRCan home-program directory as a map, then open the utility URL.
Federal Greener Homes is closed to new applicants. Do not subtract a dead grant from a 2026 quote.

HRSP eligibility on the pages we used: Enbridge Gas customer with an active account heating primarily with a gas furnace or boiler, or connected to the Ontario electricity grid and heating or cooling electrically; single / semi / row / town / mobile on a permanent foundation; have not already taken a smart-thermostat rebate from Enbridge, Save on Energy, or HRSP. Stacking manufacturer discounts carefully
A Best Buy or Home Depot sale plus an HRSP instant code is the intended stack when the portal says those retailers. A manufacturer mail-in plus a utility post-purchase rebate can be allowed or forbidden — the utility terms win. Do not apply twice (instant code and post-purchase) for the same household. Do not use a code on an ineligible SKU and expect a courtesy override.
Line-voltage baseboard stats (Mysa and peers) appear on some HRSP lists and not on Peak Perks. Buy the voltage you have — the line-voltage guide — then check the rebate list, not the other way around.
Proof-of-purchase and installation photo requirements
Expect some mix of: dated retail receipt, model and serial, account number, installation address, and proof the device is online. Instant-code paths still want you to install and connect; a stat in a closet is how programs claw back or refuse a later DR bonus. Keep PDFs. If the credit is an Enbridge bill credit vs an e-transfer for electric customers, the portal will say which. Phishing exists — start from the official hostname, not an email “confirm your rebate” link you did not expect.
If no rebate: still run the savings worksheet
Hydro-Québec: electronic vs dial can cut about 10% of annual heating cost. A well-set programmable already has most of a smart schedule. Smart extras (remote setback, heat-pump lockouts, DR) have to earn the extra $100–$200. Worksheet: last year’s heating dollars × 5–10% only if you will gain a real schedule, plus any live rebate, divided into net device cost. Seal drafts first — air sealing.
If the portal is closed or your dwelling type is a high-rise suite the program excludes, skip the hunt and buy (or do not buy) on the worksheet alone.
