How to maximize PC Optimum points at Esso and Mobil without chasing bad gas prices

Canadians will drive an extra six minutes for “points” and then pay 7¢ more per litre than the independent they passed. That is not maximizing PC Optimum. That is buying a more expensive fill and getting a sticker. Esso Extra is gone. Participating Esso and Mobil stations pay PC Optimum. The earn is real. The posted price is still the adult variable.

This is a 2026 Canada price-versus-points worksheet — litres, not gallons, and no Costco membership detour. Base earn at Esso/Mobil vs paying more than nearby stations

PC Optimum’s fuel FAQ (reviewed 20 Sep 2026, consistent with Esso’s public loyalty pages) still describes:

• 10 points per whole litre at participating Esso and Mobil
• Default burn: 10,000 points = $10, or 4,000 points = 10¢/L on the first 40 litres
• Premium-grade tiles that add more points per litre when they are loaded — not a reason to buy Synergy Supreme if you do not already

10 points × 0.1¢ = 1¢ per litre. On a 40 L fill that is $0.40. A station that is 4¢/L cheaper saves $1.60 on the same 40 L before anyone opens an app. That is the whole framework: net ¢/L = posted − instant card − points you will redeem this quarter.

The last row is the mistake: members “maximize points” and still pay $1.20 more than the independent. If earning the stack adds more than about a kilometre each way, you are buying loyalty with gasoline. At 8 L/100 km, an extra 2 km round trip is 0.16 L — more than a 1¢/L bonus on a 40 L fill once the extra fuel and time are honest.

PC Mastercard and Insiders stack rates explained carefully

Treat issuer marketing as a ceiling, then check the card you actually hold:

• PC Financial Mastercard (no annual fee, typical grocery card): public Esso/PC copy still uses 30 points per litre or “30+” when combined with the base 10. That is ~3¢/L if you redeem at 0.1¢. Enough for most households that already shop No Frills or Superstore.
• PC Insiders World Elite: Esso’s own FAQ has used the phrase up to 70 pts/L (7¢/L in points). That bundle usually assumes the Insiders card, sometimes premium fuel, and sometimes a monthly volume kicker. Public copy has also described +20 pts/L after 150 litres in a calendar month. 150 L is about four 40 L fills. Do not drive extra kilometres in week four to “hit Insiders.”
• Interest: one month of revolving balance erases a year of 3¢/L. If you would carry a balance, pay debit and take the 1¢.

Redeeming points for litres vs grocery — opportunity cost

Default math is the same 0.1¢ per point:

• 4,000 points = 10¢/L × 40 L = $4 off this fill
• 10,000 points = $10 at Loblaw banners, Shoppers, or other published redemptions

Use the fuel burn when you are filling anyway and the grocery till does not have a better event. Bank points into a Shoppers bonus-redemption week when those events actually multiply value — that is when grocery can beat 10¢/L. Do not redeem 20,000 points on a $18 convenience-store basket of drinks and chips. The markup on the shelf is larger than the points.

If you never redeem, points ¢/L is zero. That is how people “earn” for three years and still pay the posted litre.

When Mobil beside a Loblaw banner is worth the detour

A Mobil on the Superstore or No Frills lot is a trip-chain, not a pilgrimage:

1. You were already buying groceries there this week.
2. The Mobil posted price is within about 3¢/L of the cheapest station you will pass on the same loop.
3. Offers are loaded in the PC Optimum app before you tap.

If the Mobil is 8¢/L higher than the Esso (or independent) on the way home, fill on the way home. The “I was already here” argument dies when the litre is that wrong. Warehouse-club gas is a different membership question — see Costco gas vs Gold Star if that is your other till.

Offer loading and flash point promotions

1. Sunday, with the grocery loop: open PC Optimum. Load fuel offers you would use on the commute — not a car-wash tile you never buy.
2. Watch for 4,000 = 10¢/L versus a grocery 10,000 = $10. Same point value; use fuel when the tank is empty anyway.
3. Flash “20× points on fuel this weekend” tiles expire. Screenshot if the till is fussy. They sit on top of base earn, not instead of the posted price.
4. Insiders 150 L and any premium-fuel bonus: check once a month, only if the litres already happened.
5. Redeem in chunks you feel ($4 at the pump, $10 at No Frills) so the balance does not become wallpaper.

Sample month: points earned vs cents saved vs price premium

Worked example (labelled): 160 L in a month (four 40 L fills) at a household that already holds a PC Mastercard and shops Superstore.

Row two is break-even. Row three is the Sunday detour that “felt like winning.” If Insiders actually pays 7¢/L on those 160 L, row three becomes +$1.60 — still a thin prize for the extra kilometres. Put your own posted prices in the blanks.

Mistakes: burning points on convenience junk food

• Redeeming 10,000 points on a $14 Esso café combo you would not have bought. The points are worth $10; the sandwich is not.
• Chasing a Mobil that is 9¢/L high because it is “on the way to Shoppers.” Fill cheaper; shop Shoppers.
• Opening Insiders World Elite for gas when you do not want the grocery delivery product.
• Leaving 80,000 points unredeemed for two years. That is a 0¢/L stack.
• Paying the Mastercard interest to “keep the points engine on.”
