How to compare PC Optimum, Petro-Points, and Scene+ at the pump in Canada (2026)
Canadians pick a gas brand the way they pick a coffee chain: the one on the commute. Meanwhile the loyalty stack under the pump has moved. Esso and Mobil still pay PC Optimum. Petro-Canada still pays Petro-Points, now with a Platinum “frequent fuller” tier (1,000 litres a quarter from 1 Jan 2026). Shell has left the Air Miles era and pays Scene+ through Shell Go+.
This is a 2026 Canada pump comparison — litres, not gallons, and no Costco-membership detour (that is a grocery/warehouse question). Grocery-first households should still read how to maximize PC Optimum and Scene+ for groceries; the pump is a second till, not a new religion.

Journie (Ultramar) and warehouse clubs are out of scope here. If your commute only has one brand, you do not have a three-way choice — you have a stack to turn on.
Base points-per-litre vs stacked credit-card discounts
Value the point at the published fuel redemption, not at a travel portal:
- PC: 10 pts/L × 0.1¢ = 1¢/L. PC Mastercard 30 pts/L = 3¢/L. Insiders “up to 70 pts/L” is 7¢/L in points — Esso’s own FAQ uses that phrase.
- Petro-Points: 10 pts/L at 1,000 = $1 is 1¢/L. Triangle link adds 20% more Petro-Points (12 pts/L) plus CT Money. RBC’s public Petro-Canada page still markets up to 7¢/L when a card is linked — that is cash off the litre, which beats points you might forget.
- Scene+ at Shell: 1 pt/L at 1,000 = $10 is 1¢/L. Linked eligible Scotiabank cards: instant 3¢/L on any grade, plus another 4¢/L on V-Power at participating sites (7¢/L instant on premium). Go+ Scene+ link adds 10% more points on regular and 2× on V-Power.
Worked example (labelled): 40 L at $1.50/L = $60 before loyalty.
- PC free member: 400 pts ≈ $0.40 (or burn 4,000 pts for $4 off this fill if you banked them).
- PC Mastercard: 1,200 pts ≈ $1.20, plus whatever grocery offers you also wanted this week.
- Petro-Points base: 400 pts ≈ $0.40. With RBC 7¢/L instant: $2.80 off plus points.
- Shell Scene+ base: 40 pts ≈ $0.40. With 3¢/L Scotia: $1.20 off plus 40 pts.
If the Shell across the street is 8¢/L cheaper than the Esso, 40 L saves $3.20 before any card. Drive the cheaper posted price unless the stack is larger than the gap plus the extra kilometres.
Petro-Points Platinum and CT Money conversion basics
Platinum Status launched as Petro-Canada’s “frequent fuller” tier on 1 Jan 2026. Public copy: buy 1,000 litres every three months (their example: about two fill-ups a week) and you automatically get:
- 50% more Petro-Points on fuel, wash, and in-store
- $25 CT Money each quarter you qualify if Triangle is linked (up to $100/year)
- Marketing “up to $500 in annual value” that includes partner perks — treat that as a ceiling, not a forecast
1,000 L/quarter is a lot unless you already commute by car. A 40 L tank twice a week is 1,040 L. If you only fill once a week, you will not stay Platinum and should not detour to get there. Household pooling ended 15 Mar 2026 on community trackers — assume your own card only unless Petro-Canada’s live terms say otherwise.
CT Money conversion: after accounts are linked, Petro-Points can convert to CT Money (public cap often cited as 1,000,000 points / $1,000 CT Money per calendar year). Use it if you already shop Canadian Tire. Do not convert points you were about to burn for 10¢/L at the pump if that ¢/L is the only reason you stopped.
Shell Go+ and Scene+ stack after Air Miles exit
Shell’s loyalty FAQ (reviewed Sep 2026) is the replacement map: Scene+, Scotiabank, and Tangerine, nationwide. Steps that actually matter:
- Join Scene+ if you do not already have it for Sobeys or Scotia.
- Open the Shell app, enrol in Go+, and link Scene+ — that is the 10% / 2× V-Power bonus layer.
- Link an eligible Scotiabank or Tangerine payment card for instant ¢/L. The 3¢ (and V-Power extra) is the stack, not the 1 pt/L.
- Redeem 1,000 Scene+ points at the pump or in-store for $10 when you would have spent $10 anyway.
Scene+ grocery earn at Sobeys is a different till with different multipliers. Do not assume a Shell point and a FreshCo offer share a strategy beyond “one wallet.” If you never shop Empire banners and do not have a Scotia Scene+ card, Shell’s base 1¢/L is not a reason to pass a cheaper Petro-Canada.
Which program wins for grocery-first vs gas-first households
- Loblaw / No Frills / Superstore household: Keep Esso on the way home. Load PC offers on Sunday. A no-fee PC Mastercard is enough for 3¢/L plus grocery earn — see the PC Financial Mastercard worksheet. Insiders WE is a delivery-and-volume product, not a gas hobby.
- Sobeys / FreshCo / Scotia household: Shell + Go+ + Scene+ is the same points you already chase for groceries. Instant 3¢/L is the real save.
- Canadian Tire / Triangle household: Petro-Canada + linked Triangle (and RBC if you already hold it). Platinum only if the litres happen anyway.
- Gas-first, grocery-agnostic: Follow the posted price and whichever instant ¢/L card you already have. Do not open three co-branded cards for 40 L a week.
The commute test: If earning the stack adds more than about a kilometre each way, you are buying loyalty with gasoline. At 8 L/100 km, an extra 2 km round trip is 0.16 L — more than a 1¢/L bonus on a 40 L fill ($0.40) once the extra fuel and time are honest.

Net ¢/L = posted − instant − points you will actually redeem this quarter. If you never redeem, points ¢/L is zero. That is how people “earn” for years and still pay full price.
Offers to load weekly so you do not miss bonus burns
- Sunday, with the grocery loop: open PC Optimum, Petro-Points/Triangle, and Scene+/Shell. Load fuel offers you would use on the commute — not a wash you never buy.
- Watch for 4,000 PC points = 10¢/L (max 40 L) vs grocery 10,000 = $10. Same 0.1¢/point; use fuel burn when you are filling anyway.
- Petro-Canada bonus weeks and Shell app tiles are on top of base earn. They expire. Screenshot if the till is fussy.
- Redeem in chunks you feel ($10 Scene+, $4 Esso, $1 Petro) so the balance does not become wallpaper.
- Once a quarter, check Platinum status and Insiders 150 L — only if the litres already happened.
Loyalty is a rebate on the station you should have used. The posted price, the extra kilometres, and whether you pay the credit card in full are the adult variables. Points are the sticker on the receipt.

The cheapest posted litre still wins if it is several cents cheaper. On similar pump prices, stacked instant discounts (RBC at Petro-Canada, Scotiabank/Tangerine at Shell Go+) usually beat base points. PC Optimum with a PC Mastercard is competitive if you already shop Loblaw banners.
How much are the points worth?

Did Shell really leave Air Miles?
Yes. Shell Canada’s public loyalty FAQ describes a nationwide Scene+ and Shell Go+ partnership with Scotiabank and Tangerine — earn 1 Scene+ point per litre, redeem 1,000 for $10, plus instant ¢/L when an eligible card is linked.
Is Petro-Points Platinum worth chasing?
Platinum (from 1 Jan 2026) needs 1,000 litres per quarter — roughly two fill-ups a week. You get 50% more points and $25 CT Money per qualifying quarter if Triangle is linked. Do not drive extra kilometres to hit 1,000 L.
Should I get a gas credit card for points?
Only if you already pay the card in full and the station is on your way. Interest erases 7¢/L in a month. Treat co-branded cards as an offer type, not a personality.
