How to stack Shell Go+, Scene+, and card discounts at Canadian pumps in 2026
Drivers heard Shell has “the best stack” and then stood at the pump wondering which pieces they actually hold. Scene+ at Shell is real. It is not automatic. You need a Scene+ membership, a linked Shell Go+ account, and — if you want the cash ¢/L — an eligible Scotiabank or Tangerine card also linked. CAA is a separate 3¢ that may or may not combine. Air Miles at Shell is over.
This is a 2026 Canada stack map after Scene+ went coast-to-coast on 26 May 2026 (Alberta started 3 March). Pair it with the three-brand ¢/L comparison and, if you already shop Sobeys or FreshCo, Scene+ for groceries. The pump is a second till, not a new religion.
Disclosure: Scene+ linked banking cards (Scotiabank and Tangerine) and CAA membership offers are opportunity types. Saving Optimizer may earn a commission if we later add partner links. We do not currently claim issuer or club partnerships. Compare live terms on shell.ca, sceneplus.ca, and your CAA club. Never carry a card balance for 3¢/L.
Key takeaways
- Nationwide Scene+ at participating Shell: 1 point per litre and 1 point per $1 on eligible wash/convenience. Redeem 1,000 points = $10 at Shell (1¢/L at the published burn).
- Link Scene+ to Go+ in the Shell app: +10% points on regular/Plus/diesel, 2× on V-Power, +10% on eligible in-store and wash.
- Eligible Scotiabank or Tangerine cards linked to Go+: instant 3¢/L on any grade, plus another 4¢/L on V-Power at participating sites (7¢/L instant on premium).
- CAA club copy reviewed Sep 2026: 3¢/L at participating Shell through 28 Feb 2027, max 4 transactions/day and 1,000 L/month — combination is at Shell’s discretion. Verify your club and test one fill.
- A 6¢ cheaper Petro-Canada or independent still beats a 3¢ Shell stack. Do not buy V-Power to “unlock” 7¢ unless you already wanted premium.
What changed when Shell switched from Air Miles to Scene+
Shell Canada’s loyalty FAQ and Scene+ help centre (reviewed 20 Sep 2026) describe the replacement: Scene+, Scotiabank, and Tangerine. Alberta could earn from 3 March 2026; the rest of the country from 26 May 2026. Air Miles balances do not move to Scene+. If you still have Air Miles from the old Shell era, spend them in that program’s remaining catalogue — they are not litres at this pump.
What you do on a phone, once:
- Join Scene+ if you do not already have it for Sobeys, FreshCo, Safeway, or Scotia.
- Open the Shell app, enrol in Go+, and link Scene+. Unlinked Go+ is not the 10% / 2× layer.
- Link an eligible Scotiabank or Tangerine payment card if you already hold one and pay it in full. The 3¢ (and V-Power extra) is the stack, not the 1 pt/L.
- If you are a CAA member, add the club card or EasyPay path your club publishes. Then buy one tank and read the receipt before you assume 3+3.
Base earn, Go+ bonus, and V-Power nuances
| Layer | What it pays | Who qualifies |
|---|---|---|
| Scene+ base | 1 pt/L (all grades); 1 pt / $1 eligible store/wash; 1,000 pts = $10 | Scan or pay with linked Scene+ |
| Go+ linked to Scene+ | +10% points regular/Plus/diesel; 2× V-Power; +10% eligible store/wash | Link inside the Shell app |
| Scotia / Tangerine card | 3¢/L instant any grade; +4¢/L V-Power at participating sites | Eligible card linked to Go+; pay in full |
| Scene+ earning credit card | Card-earn points on the dollar spend (separate from 1 pt/L) | Only if that card is your everyday Scotia Scene+ card |
| CAA | 3¢/L (club copy to 28 Feb 2027); 10% wash/store at many clubs | Valid membership; test combination |
V-Power at 2× Scene+ is 2 pts/L ≈ 2¢/L in points, plus up to 7¢ instant if the card layer applies. Premium fuel is often 10–15¢/L more than regular. The stack does not cover that gap unless you already buy premium for the engine, not the app. Regular + 3¢ instant + 1.1¢ in points is the household stack.
Instant ¢/L discounts from eligible Scotiabank/Tangerine cards
Shell’s partner FAQ: link an eligible Scotiabank or Tangerine debit or credit card to Go+ and the pump can take 3 cents off any grade, with another 4 cents on V-Power at participating sites. That is cash on the litre — it beats points you might forget.
Rules that actually bite:
- The card must be linked. A Scotia card in your wallet that is not in Go+ is just a card.
- Some Scene+-earning credit cards already attach to Scene+. You may still need the Go+ link for the instant ¢/L. Read the in-app checklist, not a forum screenshot from April.
- Interest on a carried balance erases 3¢/L in weeks. If you would revolve, use debit and take points only.
- Do not open a Gold Amex or a new Tangerine card “for gas” if you do not already want that product for groceries or everyday spend. See Gold Amex Empire math if Sobeys is the real till.
CAA member discounts at Shell — verify your club
CAA is a federation. Club pages (Atlantic, North & East Ontario, CAA-Québec, and the national Shell tile) reviewed in September 2026 still advertise 3¢/L at participating Shell, often with 10% off washes and eligible convenience, valid through 28 Feb 2027 in the legal copy. Caps showing up in that copy: four transactions per day and 1,000 litres per calendar month per membership number. Fleet cards are excluded.
The sentence that matters: discounts “may be combined with other offers at Shell’s sole discretion.” That is not “add 3¢ CAA + 3¢ Scotia + 1¢ Scene+ and call it 7¢.” Load CAA the way your club says (physical card, number in EasyPay). Buy one tank. If the receipt shows both, you have a stack. If it shows one, you have a choice — pick the larger cash ¢/L. For whether the membership itself is worth it, use CAA tiers vs credit-card roadside, not this 3¢.
Redeeming Scene+ at the pump vs elsewhere
1,000 Scene+ points = $10 off fuel, wash, or eligible convenience at participating Shell. That is a clean 1¢ per point — better than some travel-portal conversions people brag about and never take. Redeem when you would have spent $10 on fuel anyway.
Scene+ at Sobeys, FreshCo, and theatres is a different till with different multipliers. Do not hoard 40,000 points for a flight you will not book while you pay full price for 40 L every Sunday. If you never shop Empire banners and do not have a Scotia Scene+ card, Shell’s base 1¢/L is not a reason to pass a cheaper Petro-Canada.
Worked example: regular vs V-Power all-in ¢/L
Worked example (labelled): 40 L. Regular posted 148.9. V-Power posted 161.9 (13¢ premium — your street will differ).
| Stack | Regular net ¢/L | V-Power net ¢/L | 40 L regular $ |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scene+ only (~1.1¢ pts) | ~147.8 | ~159.9 | ~$59.12 |
| + Scotia 3¢ (7¢ on VP) | ~144.8 | ~152.9 | ~$57.92 |
| Independent at 142.9, no stack | 142.9 | — | $57.16 |
Even the “best” regular Shell stack loses to a 6¢ cheaper independent. V-Power at 152.9 net is still 8¢ worse than that independent regular. Buy premium for the engine, not the tile.
When Petro-Canada or Esso still wins on street price
- Street price first. GasBuddy or the two stations you actually pass. A 5¢ gap usually beats any points layer.
- RBC already linked at Petro-Canada: public Petro pages have marketed up to 7¢/L instant. That is cash. Compare it to Shell’s 3¢ on the same evening’s posted prices.
- Loblaw household, Esso on the way home: PC Mastercard ~3¢ in points plus grocery offers. See PC Optimum at Esso/Mobil.
- Petro-Points Platinum: 1,000 L/quarter. Do not manufacture litres. If you already commute that much and hold Triangle, run the numbers in the three-brand guide.
- One-brand commute: turn on that brand’s stack. You do not have a three-way choice.
The receipt test: after you link everything, take a photo of one fill. If Scene+ did not post within a few days, the Go+ link is wrong. If the 3¢ did not come off, the card is not linked or not eligible. Fix the plumbing before you write a spreadsheet.
Habits still beat stacks when gasoline CPI is the headline — cut litres before you hunt 3¢.

Frequently asked questions
When did Shell switch from Air Miles to Scene+?
Alberta from 3 March 2026; nationwide at participating Shell from 26 May 2026. Air Miles do not convert to Scene+. Spend leftover Air Miles in that program.
What is the base Scene+ earn at Shell?
1 Scene+ point per litre on all grades and 1 point per $1 on eligible car wash and convenience. Redeem 1,000 points for $10 at participating Shell — about 1¢/L at that burn.
Do CAA 3¢ and Scotia 3¢ stack?
Not automatically. CAA legal copy says combination is at Shell’s sole discretion. Link both, buy one tank, and read the receipt. Pick the larger cash discount if they do not combine.
Is V-Power worth it for the extra points and 7¢?
Only if you already buy premium. A 10–15¢/L grade gap is larger than 4¢ extra instant plus a second Scene+ point. Regular plus 3¢ is the household stack.
When does Petro-Canada or Esso still win?
When the posted litre is several cents cheaper, or when you already have RBC instant ¢/L at Petro or a PC Mastercard on an Esso that is on the way home. Street price first.
