Spotify Family Plan Canada: Address Rules, Seats, and When Sharing Breaks

Spotify Premium Family looks like the obvious household music plan until a sister in another city is invited and the address check knocks her back to the free tier. The plan is a discount for people who live together. It is not a way to cover the extended family. The manager pays one bill. Everyone else gets a separate login. The address is the condition that makes the discount legal on Spotify’s terms, and it is the condition that fails first.

Up to six accounts; manager pays; each person gets a separate login

Spotify’s Canada Family page, read 25 Sep 2026, says family members under one roof can have up to six Premium accounts for $23.99 a month. The same figure is in the Premium page FAQ: Individual $13.99, Duo $19.99, Family $23.99, Student $6.39. The person who buys Family gets one bill. Spotify’s payments article says the manager is the only person charged, and the charge is the full amount no matter how many members actually join.

Each member uses their own Spotify account. Playlists, recommendations, and listening stay separate. The manager cannot see what everyone else is playing. That is the point of the plan, and it is also why you should not share one login “to keep it simple.” One login is not Family. It is one account, and the other people lose their own libraries the moment you change the password.

Two extras sit with the manager only. Audiobook listening time included in Family is 15 hours a month for the manager, and unused hours do not carry over. Plan members need an add-on if they want that catalogue. Managed accounts for young listeners are also the manager’s job. Spotify’s Canada Family page says listeners under 13 can be added that way, and in Quebec the age on that page is under 14. The manager can block explicit content, videos, and specific artists. A teen who already has their own account is a normal member, not a managed account, as long as they live at the address.

If anyone already pays for Premium through a phone or internet company, Spotify says you cannot start Family on top of that billing. Cancel the partner plan, wait until it ends, then subscribe to Family on Spotify. A partner line that keeps billing is the same class of problem as a streaming add-on on a Rogers or Bell bill, which the subscription audit treats as its own row.

Same-address confirmation—what Spotify asks and why out-of-town relatives fail

The Family page states the condition in one line: members must live at the same address. The support article on the plan says the same thing twice. You need to be living with the plan manager, and you enter the same home address when you join. Spotify’s address article says it asks members to verify by providing their full address in three situations: when they join, when the manager changes address, and if Spotify cannot confirm the address. The note under that list says Spotify does not track your location. It checks the address you type.

That is why an out-of-town relative fails even when everyone is honest. They do not live with the manager. Typing the manager’s address to “make the form work” is the step Spotify tells you not to take. The address article says if your own address will not autocomplete, enter it fully and choose Find, or pick the building or street. It also says not to use someone else’s address. An address can only be selected in the same country as the payment method. A U.S. card and a Canadian street are a separate failure, before the household question even starts.

Listening is not locked to the house. Spotify’s Family FAQ says you can listen anywhere, on any device. The address rule is about who may be on the plan, not about headphones on a commute. A student who moved out for the school year is no longer at the address, even if they come home at Thanksgiving. Treat the move-out date as the date they leave the plan. Do not wait for the verification email to make the decision.

Invite, remove, and replace a seat without cancelling the whole plan

The manager invites and removes people from the Family account page. Spotify’s plan article says removing members does not downgrade the plan. You still pay $23.99. Cancelling Family is a different action: the manager switches to another Premium plan or cancels, and then everyone loses the Family benefit. You do not need to do that to swap one seat.

Practical order for a seat change. Remove the person who moved out. Tell them their account will go back to the free service unless they start their own plan, and that playlists stay on their login. Send a new invite to the person who actually lives at the address. They open the link while logged into the Spotify account they want to keep, confirm it is the right account, and enter the home address. If they were already on Individual, Spotify’s payments article says remaining Premium time is forfeited when they join. Do not wait out a prepaid month and also expect a refund. Read the screen.

Plan members can only switch plans once every 12 months. That limit is printed on the Family support article for both managers and members. Do not bounce a teen off Family onto Individual and back in the same year because a verification email looked scary. Fix the address on the same plan if they still live there. A member who wants to leave on their own uses Change plan and cancels. That is their login, not a cancellation of the whole Family bill.

Break-even vs Individual times headcount in CAD

The Family price does not get cheaper as you add people, and it does not get cheaper if you leave seats empty. Compare it with Individual times the number of people who will actually use Premium.

The break-even against Individual is two people: $27.98 versus $23.99. For those two, Duo at $19.99 is the better Spotify product, and Duo has the same same-address rule. Family is the plan once a third person at that address wants Premium. Six filled seats are the marketing maximum, not a target. Empty seats still cost $23.99. If only one person listens, cancel Family and keep Individual, or cancel Premium and use the free tier. A music gift card can fund a month you already decided to keep. It does not fix an address mismatch.

What happens if Spotify challenges the household address

Spotify’s address article describes the challenge as an email, not a home visit. If something the invited member entered cannot be confirmed, Spotify emails them to reverify. They enter their full address within 7 days. Success keeps them on Premium Family. Failure, or missing the 7 days, drops that account to the free version of Spotify.

The penalty is narrower than people fear, and wider than a simple retry. They can join the same Family or Duo plan again. They cannot join any other Family or Duo plan for 12 months from the date the verification failed. They can still buy Individual or another plan they qualify for. The manager’s plan itself is not described as cancelled by one member’s failed check. The practical damage is the person who lost Premium, plus a year in which they cannot hop onto a different family plan.

If the manager has moved, update the address on the Family page before people start failing checks. Everyone still in the home then re-enters the new address. Anyone who did not move with you should be removed first, so they are not asked to confirm an address they do not live at. Keep the email. A later argument about who was on the plan is the same proof habit as the trial checklist: the message is the record, not the memory of who clicked.

Alternatives: Apple Music Family Sharing for relatives in different cities

Apple Music Family is the plan for relatives who live in different Canadian cities and still want one music bill. Apple’s Canada Family Sharing page says members must share the same home country. It does not require the same street. The Canada Music page, read 25 Sep 2026, lists the Family plan at $19.99 a month after any trial, shared with up to five other people, each with their own account. Use this split. Same roof, three or more people who want Spotify’s catalogue: Spotify Family at $23.99. Same roof, exactly two: Spotify Duo at $19.99. Different cities inside Canada: do not force Spotify Family. Price Apple Music Family at $19.99, or let each person keep Spotify Individual at $13.99 if that catalogue is the one they use. Two Spotify Individual plans are $27.98, which is $7.99 more than Apple Music Family and $3.99 more than one Spotify Family plan you are not allowed to use. Pay the honest product. A failed address check is more expensive than the $3.99 you were trying to save, because the person who fails sits on the free tier and cannot join someone else’s family plan for a year.

Student pricing does not stack onto Family. Spotify lists Student at $6.39 for an eligible student over 18, for up to four years, without the Family audiobook hours. A student who has moved into residence is a Student plan or an Individual plan, not a seat on the parents’ address. Put the renewal next to the other music and streaming dates on the household calendar.
