Book Hotel Direct vs OTA in Canada: When Loyalty Beats the Portal Price

The portal total is $40 less. It is also a prepaid rate that earns nothing, cannot be cancelled on Thursday, and does not count toward the free night you were six nights away from. Booking direct is not a slogan. It is the right buy when the gap is smaller than the night you are trying to earn, or smaller than a member benefit you will use. The portal is the right buy when the gap is real after you have priced points, breakfast, and the cancellation in dollars.

The chains’ guarantee pages and Scene+ help text were read on 23 Sep 2026. Rates move. The method does not. Tax and cleaning fees on a short-term rental are a different sheet, in the all-in lodging guide. This page is the hotel channel: the brand’s own site versus an online travel agency.

Key takeaways

  • A typical OTA prepaid rate does not earn hotel points, does not count as an elite night, and often drops the flexible cancel and the member extras.
  • Marriott’s member rate is described as at least 2 percent off on weekdays and up to 5 percent on weekends versus the lowest public non-premium rate. The best-rate guarantee, if the claim qualifies, matches the lower rate and then gives 25 percent off or 5,000 points.
  • Hilton’s price-match adds 25 percent off a qualifying public rate. IHG matches and pays 5× points, capped at 40,000, to members. Login-only and member-only prices are generally ineligible.
  • Scene+ Travel, powered by Expedia, earns and burns only when you are signed in there. Expedia.ca does not. Redemption is 100 points = $1. Hotel earn is 3 points per $1 before taxes and fees, in Canadian dollars.
  • Unbundle every flight-plus-hotel package. Price the flight alone and the hotel direct and on the portal.
  • 60-second rule: if the portal saving is smaller than one free night or an elite night you still need, book direct.

What you lose on OTAs: points, elite nights, member rates, and flexible cancellation

An online travel agency can sell a real room at a real hotel. The stay is often a wholesale rate the loyalty program does not recognize. The losses are specific.

  • Points. Eligible nights booked direct post base points to the program. A prepaid OTA rate usually posts nothing. A “member rate” you can see only inside Expedia is not the hotel’s member rate.
  • Elite nights. Status tracks nights or stays on qualifying rates. A cheap portal week can leave the counter at zero in a year you needed ten more nights. If you will not reach the tier anyway, the night credit is worth $0. Say so. Do not invent a value for a status level you will not hit.
  • Member rate and member extras. Direct channels publish a logged-in rate and, at many brands, status benefits such as late checkout, a better room when one is free, or breakfast at certain tiers. Those benefits are not a promise on a third-party rate. Read this year’s benefit chart for the tier you already hold. A breakfast you will eat is worth the menu price. A breakfast you will skip is worth nothing.
  • Cancellation. Direct flexible rates are often cancellable until a day or two out. Portal prepaid rates are often not. A $40 save that becomes a forfeited $220 night because the flight moved is not a save. Price the difference only on rates with a cancellation rule you can live with, or admit you are buying a non-refundable product.

You do not lose the right to a clean room or the hotel’s legal obligations. You lose the program. If you do not belong to the program and will not use a free night, the portal’s only job is the all-in cash price. Join the program if it is free and you might book direct later. Do not join three programs for one night. Pick the brand you will actually repeat. That is a habit, not a ranking of cards that earn hotel points.

Marriott/Hilton/IHG member rate and best-rate guarantee workflows

The three large programs publish a member discount and a guarantee with a procedure. The procedure is the product. A guarantee you do not file is a brochure.

Marriott Bonvoy. The member-rate page says members receive a preferred rate on direct channels, described as at least 2 percent on weekdays and up to 5 percent on weekends off the lowest applicable public rate for non-premium rooms. Book it while logged in. The Best Rate Guarantee is a second step: book direct first, find a qualifying lower rate for the same hotel, room, bed, number of guests up to two, inclusions, dates, and cancellation policy, and submit the claim within 24 hours of booking and at least 24 hours before standard check-in. If approved, Marriott matches the lower rate and you choose an extra 25 percent off (20 percent at Design Hotels) or 5,000 points. A rate behind a login, a membership, or a package often fails the comparison. Screenshot the other rate before it disappears.

Hilton. The price-match page says that if you book direct and then find a lower qualifying rate, Hilton matches it and takes an additional 25 percent off the room. The comparison has to be at least 1 percent lower, in the same currency, viewable and bookable by the public without a login or a code, and still available when they review the claim. Member-only, corporate, and package rates are excluded. Some hotels are excluded, including Hampton properties in mainland China. Read the exclusion list the day you claim.

IHG One Rewards. The Best Price Guarantee says a qualifying lower rate on a non-IHG site is matched, and the member who claimed it receives five times the points on that room rate, up to 40,000 points. You need a direct booking first and a completed claim. The guarantee does not apply to hotels in mainland China, Macau, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. Compare in the same currency as the IHG booking. The bonus points are for members.

Guarantee workflows from the brands’ own pages, read 23 Sep 2026. Terms have exclusions. A failed claim leaves you on the direct rate you already booked, which is why you only book direct when that rate was acceptable.
Brand Book first If the claim qualifies
Marriott Direct. Claim within 24 hours, and 24 hours before check-in. Match, plus 25 percent off or 5,000 points
Hilton Direct. Public rate at least 1 percent lower, same currency. Match, plus 25 percent off
IHG Direct. Same currency. Not all countries. Match, plus 5× points up to 40,000

The order is always direct first, then the claim. Booking the portal because you plan to “match it later” skips the step the guarantee requires. If the direct flexible rate is far above a non-refundable portal rate, they may not be the same product, and the claim will fail the cancellation test. Compare like with like.

When an OTA cashback or package deal still wins after loyalty value

Loyalty has a dollar value you can write down. A free night in a hotel you would have paid $180 for is worth about $180, minus any resort fee the award still charges. An elite night is worth the value of the tier you will actually reach, spread across the nights you still need. If you need four more nights and the tier’s breakfast is worth $20 to you, each of those nights is worth about $5 of progress plus the points on the stay. It is not worth a fictional $100 because a blog said status is valuable.

The portal wins when the all-in cash gap is larger than that number, and the terms are usable.

  • A $90 gap on a one-night stop, when you do not need elite credit and the rate is cancellable enough, is a portal night. The points on one direct night are rarely worth $90.
  • A $25 gap on a four-night stay, when the fourth night would have been an elite-qualifying night you need, is a direct stay. You are paying $25 for the night credit and the points.
  • Cash-back portals and rebate sites are an offer type. A promised 8 percent back that arrives as a restricted credit three months later is not 8 percent off tonight. Count it only at the value you will redeem, after you have used that site before.
  • A non-refundable portal rate wins only if you would have booked non-refundable direct too. Otherwise you are comparing a flexible product with a sunk one.
Bar chart of a labelled four-night stay: portal 760 dollars, direct member rate 800 dollars, a 40 dollar gap, beside a free-night value of 180 dollars that is larger than the gap.
Labelled gap. Forty dollars is smaller than one $180 free night, so the 60-second rule books direct. Your night’s value replaces $180.

Package flight+hotel math: unbundle and re-price each piece

Packages look cheap because the pieces are not on the screen. Unbundle before you pay a deposit.

  1. Price the flight alone on the dates you will fly, in the fare brand you will actually use. A package that hides a basic fare with no carry-on is not comparable to a standard ticket. Use the Basic versus Standard check.
  2. Price the hotel direct, logged in, for the same room and cancellation rule, and price it on the portal as a room-only rate.
  3. Add the package’s mandatory extras: transfers you will not use, a resort credit with blackout rules, baggage that was “included” because the flight brand was inflated.
  4. Subtract only benefits you will use. A $200 resort credit you will spend is $200. A $200 credit at a spa you will not enter is $0.

If the package total is still lower than flight plus direct hotel by more than one free-night value, the package can win, and you accept that the hotel stay may not post to the program. If the package wins by $30 and costs you a qualifying stay, book the pieces. The sun-destination version of this unbundle, with food and tips, is the Mexico package guide. Do not copy a resort week onto a city hotel.

Canadian portal quirks (Expedia.ca Scene+ travel) vs paying CAD direct

Two Canadian quirks change the screenshot from a U.S. blog.

Currency. A direct rate charged in Canadian dollars is the price. A portal rate in U.S. dollars, converted by your card, is the price plus the card’s foreign conversion. Compare in one currency. Hilton and IHG both require the guarantee comparison to be in the same currency as the booking. A USD rate that looks lower can lose once the conversion and a foreign-transaction fee are on it. The FX habit is the travel-money guide.

Scene+ Travel. Scene+ says its travel site is powered by Expedia and fulfilled by Expedia, and that you earn and redeem only when you book through Scene+ Travel while signed in. Booking on Expedia.ca does not earn or redeem Scene+ points. The published redemption rate is 100 points for $1. Hotels, car rentals, and activities booked through Scene+ Travel earn 3 points per $1 on the eligible amount, excluding taxes and fees. The call centre can add a booking fee. Prices are in Canadian dollars unless the site says otherwise.

That earn is a thin rebate: 3 points per dollar, redeemed at 100 points per dollar, is about 3 cents of travel per dollar if you will actually spend the points on Scene+ Travel. It is not hotel elite credit. A $800 Scene+ hotel booking is on the order of 2,400 points, or about $24 of future travel, and it may still be an Expedia stay that does not credit Marriott or Hilton. Count the $24. Do not count it as status. If you want the hotel points, book the hotel direct and use Scene+ where it does not conflict, or accept the $24 and skip the hotel program for that stay. The broader Scene+ versus Aeroplan choice is the points guide. It is not a card ranking either.

Build a 60-second rule: if savings < one free night or status night, book direct

You do not need a spreadsheet at the kitchen table if the gap is obvious. Use one minute.

  1. Write the portal all-in total and the direct all-in total for the same dates, room, and cancellation rule. The gap is portal minus direct. A negative gap means direct is already cheaper. Book direct.
  2. Write the value of one free night you are working toward, in dollars you would have paid. If you are not working toward one, write $0.
  3. Write the value of one elite night only if this stay moves you to a tier you will use this year. Otherwise $0.
  4. If the portal gap is smaller than the free-night value, or smaller than a status night you still need, book direct. File the guarantee if a truly public rate is lower.
  5. If the portal gap is larger than both numbers, and you accept the cancellation rule, book the portal. Screenshot the rate.
Labelled four-night example. Direct member rate $200 a night, portal $190, same cancellation. Free-night value $180. Elite credit not needed.
Check Amount
Portal, four nights $760
Direct, four nights $800
Gap $40
One free night you are building $180
Rule Gap is smaller than the free night. Book direct.

Change the free-night line to $0 and the same $40 gap books the portal. The rule is only as honest as that line. A household that never redeems does not have a $180 night. They have a cash gap. Pay the cash gap the cheaper way, on a rate they can cancel if the trip is not fixed.

Frequently asked questions

Do I lose points if I book a hotel on Expedia?

Usually yes. Marriott, Hilton, and IHG award points and elite-night credit on eligible direct bookings, not on a typical prepaid online-travel-agency rate. You can also lose the member rate, a flexible cancellation window, and benefits such as breakfast or late checkout that are tied to status. Read the rate rules. A few partner rates exist. Assume you lose the stay until the loyalty account says otherwise.

What is a hotel best-rate guarantee worth?

It is a claim you file after you book direct, not a coupon. Marriott matches a qualifying lower rate and then takes 25 percent off or adds 5,000 points, if you claim within 24 hours of booking and at least 24 hours before check-in. Hilton matches and takes an extra 25 percent off when the public rate is at least 1 percent lower. IHG matches and adds five times the points, up to 40,000, for members. Member-only and login-gated prices usually do not qualify.

Does Scene+ work if I book on Expedia.ca?

No. Scene+ says points are earned and redeemed only when you book through Scene+ Travel while signed in. Scene+ Travel is powered by Expedia, and prices are in Canadian dollars. Booking on Expedia.ca itself does not earn or redeem Scene+ points. The redemption rate published for Scene+ Travel is 100 points for $1. Hotels booked there earn 3 points per $1 before taxes and fees.

When does the portal still win?

When the all-in cash gap is larger than the free night or the elite night you would have earned, and you can live with the cancellation rule. A package that is cheap only because you have not priced the flight and the hotel separately is not a win yet. Unbundle it.

What is the 60-second rule?

If the portal’s saving is smaller than one free-night value, or smaller than an elite night you still need this year, book direct. If the saving is larger than both, and the cancellation terms are acceptable, the portal can be the rational buy.
