Budget Gyms in Canada (Fit4Less and Peers): Fees, Holds, and Cancel Checklists
A budget gym wins on the poster and loses in the contract: bi-weekly dues, an annual fee on the anniversary, a “lock in your rate” add-on, and 30 days of billing after you decide to leave. Fit4Less publishes those lines. Peer clubs often use the same shape with different numbers. The household job is to price the year, decide whether a hold is a cancel in disguise, and leave with proof. A premium club’s pool and steam room do not change that arithmetic if you never use them.
The visit-count decision against a home setup is the gym versus home guide. GoodLife’s notice and buyout habit is the GoodLife guide. Ontario’s 10-day cooling-off, for a prepaid commercial contract of $50 or more, is the cooling-off guide. Fit4Less is a commercial club. Do not assume a municipal centre follows the same script.
Disclosure: Home workout gear is an offer type. Saving Optimizer may earn a commission if we later add a partner link. We do not currently claim a Fit4Less, GoodLife, or equipment partnership. Education only. Price the contract before you buy a substitute.
Key takeaways
- Fit4Less pages used 25 Sep 2026: 4Less Card $7.99 every two weeks for one club, Black Card $13.99 every two weeks for all clubs, both plus a $49.99 annual fee at join and around each anniversary. Taxes extra. Before tax, 26 drafts make 4Less about $21.48 a month all-in and Black Card about $34.48.
- Lock in Your Rate is $9.95 plus tax every three months after 30 free days. Fit4Less says the fee is non-refundable and can still be charged during the 30-day cancellation notice.
- The club’s “Know Your Club” page says membership holds are not available. A hold that other clubs do sell can still draft a fee. If the hold costs money, compare it with cancelling.
- Fit4Less wants at least 30 days’ notice, at the in-club kiosk or by phone. A one-year paid-in-full membership is non-refundable. The annual fee can still come out during the notice, depending on your join date.
- A premium upgrade is worth it only for an amenity you used in the last 30 days. Student and corporate rates need proof, and they do not cancel themselves when the semester or the job ends.
- Leave with the confirmation, the final PAD date, and any fob deposit returned. Stopping the bank draft is not the cancel.
Compare headline dues vs annual fees, key fobs, and towel add-ons
Fit4Less’s membership cards, on the lock-in page read 25 Sep 2026, are the clean example of a headline that is not a month. Payments of $7.99 or $13.99, plus tax, start every two weeks. A $49.99 annual fee, plus tax, is charged at sign-up and on or around the anniversary. The page says applicable taxes apply and that other conditions are at the club. A year with 26 bi-weekly drafts is the usual count. Some calendars produce 27. Use the draft schedule in the contract if it disagrees with 26.
| Line | 4Less Card, one club | Black Card, all clubs |
|---|---|---|
| Headline | $7.99 every 2 weeks | $13.99 every 2 weeks |
| Dues, 26 drafts | $207.74 | $363.74 |
| Annual fee | $49.99 | $49.99 |
| Year before tax | $257.73 | $413.73 |
| True month before tax | $21.48 | $34.48 |
Black Card is about $13 more a month before tax than 4Less, for every location plus the amenities the card lists where they exist. Pay the difference only if you used a second club in the last month. Towel service, tanning, and a guest pass are not free everywhere. The Fit4Less footnotes say several of those benefits are at participating clubs, during staffed hours, and that friends and family access has conditions. If your club charges a towel or a replacement fob, write that dollar on the contract. The pages we read do not publish a national towel price or a fob deposit. Do not invent one. Ask, and add it to the year.
Peer discount clubs, the ones on the same street with a similar bi-weekly poster, get the same worksheet: headline draft, how many drafts a year, annual or enhancement fee, fob, towel, and any “rate lock” product. If the peer will not put those lines on paper before you sign, you are not looking at a budget. You are looking at a surprise.
Hold vs cancel: when a hold still costs money
Fit4Less’s Know Your Club page says membership holds are not available. You cannot freeze a Fit4Less membership to stop the drafts while you travel. The choices are pay, or give the 30 days’ notice and cancel. A hold at another club is not automatically free. Some contracts charge a hold fee every month you are “paused,” and the annual fee still lands on the anniversary. If the hold costs $15 a month and you will be away for three months, the hold is $45 plus any annual fee that falls inside it. Cancelling and rejoining can be cheaper if the rejoin fee is smaller and you are willing to lose a promotional rate. Read both numbers before you pick the word “hold” because it sounds kinder.
Lock in Your Rate is not a hold. Fit4Less sells it as a way to keep the current dues from rising: 30 days free, then $9.95 plus tax every three months. That is about $39.80 a year before tax if it bills four times. The footnote says the fee is non-refundable once paid, subject to statutory rescission rights, and that it can still be charged during the 30-day cancellation notice. It also says Fit4Less can change the fee or how often it is taken, with notice. A rate lock on a membership you are about to cancel is an extra draft, not protection. Skip it unless you have already decided to stay for years and the club has a history of raising the rate you are on.
Notice periods and in-club vs online cancel requirements
Fit4Less’s cancel FAQ says you may cancel in the club on the self-service kiosk in the front vestibule, or by phone at the club’s number. The club requires at least 30 days’ notice. Upgrades and downgrades cannot be processed during that notice. A one-year paid-in-full membership is non-refundable. The annual-fee FAQ adds that the $49.99 fee may still be withdrawn during the 30-day notice, depending on your join date, and that you pay all fees during the notice. Plan the cancel 30 days before you need the drafts to stop, and check whether the anniversary falls inside those 30 days. If it does, the annual fee is part of the exit, not a billing error.
Other budget clubs split the same way: some accept an online form, some insist you attend in person, some want a registered letter. The contract’s sentence is the requirement. A phone call without a confirmation email is a conversation. Ontario members who are still inside 10 days of receiving a written prepaid contract of $50 or more should use the statutory cancel in the cooling-off guide, in writing, and not wait out a 30-day club policy. The Consumer Protection Act path is not the kiosk script. Outside those 10 days, the club’s notice is what you follow, and you still keep proof.
GoodLife’s paths are different: Member Portal, the club, or 1-800-387-2524 on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern, on the contact page used 24 Sep 2026. Do not serve a Fit4Less notice to GoodLife or the reverse. Each adult cancels the membership in their own name.
When upgrading to a premium club is never worth the unused amenities
Black Card inside Fit4Less, or a move from any budget club to a full-service club, is the same test. List the amenities you used in the last 30 days. A pool, a steam room, a group class, a second address near work. If the list is empty, the upgrade is a tour you already took. The price gap is not theoretical. On the Fit4Less figures, Black Card is about $156 a year more than 4Less before tax ($413.73 minus $257.73), for access you did not use. A premium club at $60 to $100 a month, the range in the home-workout guide’s pain line, is hundreds more. Pay it when the amenity is the reason you go. Do not pay it so the membership feels more serious.
Classes you attended once at a guest pass are not a habit. Give the class a month at the budget club, or at the community centre, before you sign the premium contract. If the premium contract is annual and prepaid, you are also buying the notice rules. Read them in the building, before the card comes out. The home-kit math still applies: if you are not going, a more expensive club will not fix the month.
Student and corporate discount verification
A student rate and a corporate rate are conditional prices. They are not a permanent discount that survives graduation or a job change. Ask what proof the club wants, how often it must be renewed, and what the dues become the month the proof lapses. Get that in writing on the agreement. GoodLife’s corporate-program FAQs, summarized in the GoodLife guide, say the rate can move to the non-discounted price on the agreement when eligibility ends, and that each member cancels their own membership. Budget clubs are at least as literal. A student who finishes in April and does not update the club can be billed the regular draft, or cancelled for failing verification, depending on the contract. Diary the proof date beside the annual fee.
Do not hand over a work email as if that alone locks a rate. If the employer’s benefit site is the official path, use that path and save the confirmation. If a salesperson offers a student price without writing the expiry, assume the price can change at the anniversary. Verify before you rely on it for the year in the table above.
Exit checklist: confirmation email, final PAD date, return key fob deposits
Cancel, then collect four things before you call it done.
- A confirmation that names you, the membership, and the end date. A kiosk receipt counts if it has those facts. Photograph it in the club. If you cancelled by phone, ask for the email before you hang up.
- The final pre-authorized debit date and amount, including an annual fee if the anniversary sits inside the notice. Fit4Less warns that this can happen. Write it on the calendar so the draft does not look like a mistake.
- Key fob or access card returned, and any deposit the contract promised back. If there was no deposit, there is nothing to chase. If there was, the return is part of the cancel, not a favour.
- A statement check one cycle later. The recurring-charge guide is the method. Cancelling the PAD at the bank does not end the membership. Payments Canada’s rule, noted in the GoodLife guide, limits how long a biller may keep debiting after you revoke the PAD. It does not erase dues the contract still treats as owing.
If a draft lands after the written end date, send the confirmation the same week and ask for the reversal in writing. Do not rejoin to “sort it out.” Rejoining is a new contract, with a new annual fee at Fit4Less.

- $207.74, $257.73, $21.48, $363.74, $413.73, $34.48, and $156 are arithmetic on the Fit4Less figures and 26 drafts, before tax. A 27th draft changes the year. They are not a quote for your club if you joined on a promotion.
Frequently asked questions
Is $7.99 the monthly price?
No. Fit4Less pages used 25 Sep 2026 show $7.99 every two weeks for the 4Less Card, plus a $49.99 annual fee, before tax. With 26 drafts that is $257.73 a year, about $21.48 a month. Black Card at $13.99 every two weeks is about $34.48 a month all-in, before tax.
Can I freeze a Fit4Less membership?
The Know Your Club page says membership holds are not available. At a peer club, a hold that still charges a fee can cost more than cancelling. Compare the hold price with leaving and rejoining.
How do I cancel?
Fit4Less asks for at least 30 days’ notice, at the in-club kiosk or by phone. A one-year paid-in-full membership is non-refundable. The annual fee can still be drafted during the notice if the anniversary falls there. Keep the confirmation.
Does Lock in Your Rate save money if I am about to cancel?
It is $9.95 plus tax every three months after 30 free days. Fit4Less says it is non-refundable and can still be charged during the 30-day notice. Skip it unless you have decided to stay.
I stopped the bank draft. Am I cancelled?
No. Cancelling the PAD does not cancel the membership. Get the club’s end date in writing, return any fob that had a deposit, and check the next statement.
