How much does a home Level 2 EV charger cost in Canada—and which rebates still help?
New EV owners often budget the wall unit they saw on Amazon and then discover the expensive line is the circuit, the permit, and sometimes a panel upgrade. Others skip a utility rebate because the charger was not on the eligible list — then “save” money by sitting on a $0.50/kWh public DC stall three times a week. A 32–40 A plug-in unit on an existing NEMA 14-50 (some ranges and older dryers) can be the cheap path. A 48–80 A hardwired station on a long garage run is the expensive path. Match amperage to the car and the panel, not to a forum flex.
Condo / rental realities: when home charging is not possible
If you rent a house, you need written landlord permission and you should expect to leave the circuit behind. If you rent or own in a tower, the bottleneck is the electrical room and the parking garage, not your personality.
- Ask the board or property manager, in email: is EV charging allowed, is there a wait-list, who pays the hydro, is there a load-management system, and what is the typical owner cost?
- A shared-riser project can be a five-figure special assessment spread across stalls. That is not “$350 off a FLO.”
- Assigned stall with no conduit is a maybe. Tandem or visitor parking is usually a no.
- If the answer is no, the EV TCO must use public or workplace kWh. Re-run EV vs gas before you sign.
Do not take delivery of an EV into a stall you have not confirmed. Level 1 (120 V) overnight can work for a short urban commute (~8–10 km of range per hour). It will not refill a highway week. Pretending otherwise is how people live at DC fast chargers.
Provincial and utility charger rebates to check (QC, BC Hydro, etc.)
Vehicle rebates and charger rebates are different envelopes. Ontario can give you EVAP on the car and $0 on the wall. Verify remaining funds the week you install.

Rebates usually want a licensed electrician, a permit, an eligible model, and receipts dated inside a window. Buying a no-name unit from a marketplace to “save $200” can cost the entire rebate.
Night-time electricity rates and rough ¢/kWh commuting math
Ontario Energy Board RPP prices (1 Nov 2025–31 Oct 2026): TOU 9.8¢ off-peak, 15.7¢ mid, 20.3¢ on-peak. Ultra-Low Overnight: 3.9¢ every day 11 p.m.–7 a.m., with a steep 39.1¢ weekday 4–9 p.m. Those are commodity prices. Delivery, regulatory, and HST still apply — many households see an all-in closer to the mid-teens to low twenties off-peak once the whole bill is allocated. Use your last hydro bill’s effective ¢/kWh as a check.
Worked commute (labelled): 15,000 km × 20 kWh/100 km = 3,000 kWh. At 9.8¢ commodity = $294/year. At an 18¢ all-in sketch = $540. At 50¢ public DC = $1,500. That last number is why the charger exists. A $2,000 net install ÷ ($1,500 − $540) ≈ two years of 15,000 km public-vs-home spread. At 8,000 km the same spread is $800 − $288 = $512, so payback stretches past three years before you count convenience. Put your kilometres in; do not use a national EV brochure.
Québec and Manitoba kWh are often cheaper. B.C. two-step residential rates can make a charger that pushes you into step 2 look worse on paper. Read the tariff you actually pay.
Smart charger features worth paying for
Pay extra only for features that save money or keep you rebate-eligible:
- Scheduled charging so you hit off-peak / ULO without waking up at 11 p.m.
- Load sharing / power management if the panel is tight — and if B.C.’s $200 rider applies.
- Connected / networked if Québec’s list requires remote commands.
- Wi-Fi that works in a garage. A smart charger that cannot see the router is a dumb charger with a subscription nag.
Skip: decorative app badges, “solar ready” you will not wire, and 80 A hardware for a car that only draws 32 A. Cold-weather cable rating is not a gimmick in Winnipeg.
DIY vs licensed electrician — safety and insurance
A 240 V / 40 A circuit is inside the space where Canadian electrical codes, permits, and insurer questions live. A licensed electrician pulls the permit, sizes the breaker, and gets the inspection. That is the path that rebate programs and home insurers understand.
DIY is how people skip a $400 labour line and create a $40,000 garage claim. If your insurer asks who installed the charger after a fire, “a cousin who is handy” is not a feature. This is not legal advice; it is a reason to pay for the ticketed trade.
- Get two electrician quotes with panel photos. Ask whether a load-management device avoids an upgrade.

Home charging wins when you park where a cable reaches, overnight, most days. Public DC wins as a road-trip tool, not as a commute grocery. Workplace charging can delay a home install by years. If work is free or cheap and you commute five days, run the numbers before you open the panel. Free at work is still a taxable-benefit conversation for some employer setups; that is payroll, not this article.
