Google One vs iCloud+ in Canada for Photo Backup: Pick One Ecosystem

Mixed households pay for the same photos twice: iCloud because the iPhone asked, and Google Photos because the laptop and the Android phone already lived there. The monthly gap between a 2 TB iCloud plan and a 2 TB Google plan is about a dollar on the prices below. The waste is the second subscription, not the choice of the first. Pick the ecosystem that matches the phones you will still own next year, export before you delete, and review the tier once a year.

Compare CAD plans and shared family seats

Use the publisher pages, not a US price that a browser outside Canada may show. Apple Support’s Canada table, published 16 September 2026, lists iCloud+ at $1.29 for 50 GB, $3.99 for 200 GB, $12.99 for 2 TB, $39.99 for 6 TB, and $79.99 for 12 TB, monthly. Any of those plans can be shared with up to five other people in Family Sharing. Files stay separate. The pool is shared. The free 5 GB is per Apple Account.

Google’s plans page, in a Canada-priced view captured 25 Sep 2026, listed a free 15 GB, Basic (100 GB) at CA$2.79 a month, Google AI Plus (2 TB) at CA$13.99 a month, and Google AI Pro (5 TB) at CA$26.99 a month. The same view said storage can be shared with up to five other people, and it offered an annual toggle described as saving up to 16 percent. That capture did not include a full set of annual dollar totals, so this page does not invent them. Open the toggle and read the yearly charge before you prepay. The same URL can render US dollars. If you see US$1.99 for 100 GB, you are not looking at the Canada price this paragraph cites.

Twelve months of iCloud 2 TB is 12 × $12.99 = $155.88. Twelve months of the Google 2 TB price above is 12 × $13.99 = $167.88, before any annual discount the toggle shows. A $12 gap is not a reason to pick the cheaper logo if the cheaper logo cannot restore the phone you use. iPhone-native restore vs cross-platform Google Photos access

iCloud Backup, when the iPhone is on Wi-Fi and power, is how a new iPhone becomes the old one: settings, app layout, and the data Apple includes in that backup. iCloud Photos keeps the library in the Apple apps. If everyone who matters uses an iPhone or a Mac, iCloud is the native path. Google Photos on an iPhone is an app. It can hold the pictures. It does not restore the iPhone.

Google Photos is the path when someone in the house uses Android, or when the family looks at photos on a Windows PC and does not want iCloud for Windows as a requirement. A Shared Photo Library in iCloud can include up to five other people, on Apple’s description, and shared albums can be viewed more widely. That still assumes the library lives in iCloud. If the Android phone is a daily camera, those photos are not in that library unless someone copies them. Copying by hand is how the second subscription starts.

Decide with a one-week test. Which app did you open when someone asked for the birthday picture? That app is the library. The other app is a duplicate until you turn its backup off.

Gmail/Drive shared quota realities on Google One

Google’s 15 GB, and every paid Google One tier above it, is one number for Gmail, Drive, and Photos. A full inbox and a Drive full of school files shrink the room for photos. iCloud’s 5 GB is also shared among Apple’s iCloud data, including backups, but Gmail does not sit in that 5 GB. Before you buy Google’s 100 GB plan for photos, open the storage breakdown and subtract mail and Drive. If mail is 12 GB, a 100 GB plan leaves less than 90 GB for everything else, and the family share makes that pool smaller still. iCloud 200 GB at $3.99 does not include the Gmail problem, and it does not solve it. If the pain is a full Gmail, the fix is deleting mail or buying Google storage, not buying iCloud. If the pain is an iPhone that will not back up, the fix is iCloud or a smaller backup, not a Google Photos upload that leaves the iPhone backup failing.

Avoid paying both because phone and laptop disagree

The usual split is an iPhone on iCloud and a laptop on Drive, with Google Photos “just in case.” The photos then exist in both places, and both bills continue. Pick one library for photos. Put documents in that same company’s drive if you can: iCloud Drive, or Google Drive. A laptop can use iCloud for Windows, or a browser, for the files that used to justify a second cloud. If a work policy requires Drive, keep Drive for work files and turn off Google Photos backup so the personal camera roll is not in both.

Count the bills. iCloud 200 GB at $3.99 plus Google 100 GB at CA$2.79 is about $6.78 a month for overlapping photos, which is more than either small plan and a large fraction of one 2 TB plan. Two 2 TB plans, $12.99 plus $13.99, are $26.98 a month, about $324 a year, for one library stored twice. Cancel the one you did not pick after the export in the next section has been opened and checked. Leaving both “for a month” becomes the year.

Apple One can already include an iCloud+ tier. Adding Google One on top for the same photos is the same double pay. Read the Apple subscriptions list before you add anything.

Export tools (Takeout / Apple data transfer) before switching

Do not delete the source cloud to “save the $13” until a copy exists somewhere you can open. Google Takeout, at takeout.google.com, can export Photos, Drive, and Gmail. It is a large download. Request Photos, wait for the email, download it, and open a sample of recent months and one old year. Apple’s data and privacy tools, from the Apple ID privacy page, request a copy of iCloud data. That copy can take days. Neither tool is instant, and neither is a reason to cancel tonight.

A simpler photo move, when you are staying inside one app, is to let the destination app upload from the phone while the source plan is still active. Then confirm the counts are close, then turn off backup in the app you are leaving, then downgrade. Counts will not match perfectly if screenshots or WhatsApp images were included on only one side. Annual review: delete burst photo years and reconsider tier

Once a year, in the January hour on the renewal calendar, sort the library by year. A trip that produced thousands of near-duplicates is not a reason to hold 2 TB forever. Delete the bursts you will not look at, empty the trash so the space returns, and look at the meter. If you are under 200 GB on iCloud, the $3.99 plan replaces $12.99. If Google’s meter fits in 100 GB after mail is trimmed, the CA$2.79 plan replaces the 2 TB plan. If you are still over, stay. The review is allowed to end with “keep the tier.”

Prepay Google’s annual option only after that review, and only if the six-month use test is true. iCloud on Apple’s table is monthly. There is no annual iCloud badge to chase. Put a 30-day reminder before any Google annual renewal so you can delete the burst year first. The cap that stops a second cloud from sneaking back is the household cap.
